Lovely day @zoopoznan training young lions, discussing strategies for addressing behavior problems, caracal training, red river hog training and a little fun hanging out with tapirs. Off to see if we can solve a capuchin monkey training challenge next. Our goals are to make day to day care easier and medical care stress free. Things are off to a very good start 😊❤️#animaltraining #animalwelfare #positivereinforcement #tapirs #babytapir (at Zoo Poznań Official Site)
Follow Up on Abuse vs. Bad Training
Since things seem to have died down a bit, thankfully, I just wanted to make an overview of things. According to the author of the book, as well as other sources, the GSD was, in fact, trained to jump into the water. The problem came up when the dog was asked to jump into the water from another side--which, like I said, might not have happened if the dog was proofed. Proofing a dog means training them in different environments and distractions. I like to do obedience sessions with my two working dogs in pet-friendly places like Lowe’s or Home Depot to help them generalize the behaviors I want and expect from them. What applies at home, applies to other places. Dogs can’t generalize behaviors unless you proof them and train them in different places. The GSD should have been trained to the point where it didn’t matter what angle, side, direction, or even if it was a different setting. But who knows? Like I said, there was something in that situation at that time that caused the dog to not want to jump.
This being said, I’ve heard that there were apparently other allegations of abuse. I don’t know what those allegations are, but if they involve animals looking scared and being forced to do something they didn’t want to do, take a step back and breathe. A scared-looking animal isn’t exactly an abused one. Animals get scared and spooked for hundreds of reasons, and over half of them don’t make any sense. Just the other day my dutch shepherd spooked at an empty dog-food bag. My 1-year old KNPV dog, who will confidently (and happily) bark-charge-and-bite a protection decoy that is shouting and wielding a clatter stick (a bamboo stick with vertical cuts so that it makes a clattering sound when you shake it), was scared of an empty dog-food bag.
So what did I do right after that mishap--since he did break an obedience command? I immediately desensitized him to it. I made him walk over it, stand on it, and let me touch the bag to him--all luring with food. And at the end of that session, he didn’t blink an eye at the bag. Will I ever know or understand what spooked my dog? No, but as long as he realizes that empty dog-food bags aren’t life-threatening, I don’t need to.

Today’s Topic: : Planning for the Best-Case Training Scenario, While Being Prepared for the Worst Our goal is to have a training session in which we work through approximations so that animals emit behaviors that result in desired outcomes. Often this is accomplished by careful planning, creative designing, and thoughtful application. However, training involves working with living organisms and many factors can contribute to even the best of intentions straying off track. In today’s livestream we discuss strategies to consider that support getting to the best-case scenario, while being proactive in preparing for the worst-case scenario, and what to do when things don’t go as planned. Today’s Topic: Exploring the Metaphor of “Trust Accounts” in Animal Training The metaphor of a “trust account” has been heavily promoted in animal training. But what do we really know about this metaphor? Where did it come from? Has it been empirically tested? What is the behavioral explanation for when it seems to “work” and when it doesn’t work?
