As always, the activists were giving water to the pigs. On this day their suffering was intensified due to a heatwave and many of the pigs were showing signs of heat-exhaustion/heat-stroke. When we give water to the animals, it is not only to try and ease their physical pain, but to show them, who have likely never experienced kindness from a human before, and who are minutes away from a violent death, that we care. That their lives matter. So that, even though we could not save their lives, we were at least able to prevent them from dying without ever having known love. We had been doing this for years without issue and yet it was for this that co-founder Anita Krajnc was criminally charged on that particularly hot day. If found guilty, she faces a possible 5000$ fine and jail time. Despite this, Anita has always been optimistic and saw the trial as a way to raise awareness about the devastation of animal agriculture for the environment, our health, and the animals. Indeed, this trial has brought Toronto Pig Save major media attention and as a result, The Save Movement has seen incredible growth, with the current number of groups being at almost 150 worldwide. So, in a beautifully ironic turn of events, no matter what the verdict, the #pigtrial has brought forth victory for the animals.
