Do you think aroace people should be the only people able to ship aroace characters (unless of course the character is a-spec and dating in canon)

I think it depends on the context (really boring answer, I know).

(Stuff like this usually leaves my regular orbit. So, for reference, this is coming from someone who is ace and on the aro spectrum who considers herself an asexual lesbian)

If the aroace character has made clear that they want nothing to do with a romantic relationship, then I don't think anyone—including aspec people—should ship them with anyone.

If the aroace character has been neutral/not said anything about wanting to be in a romantic relationship, then I think it should be done with the fact that they are aroace in mind. Not in a "aroace people can still date" way, but in the way that the "romantic" shipping can be better compared to a queerplatonic relationship.

If the character is pro-romance, then I think it's fair game (to a certain extent, obviously it depends on the context).
