Unsuspecting of the book ambush, as he chose to remember it by, Ray coughed, nearly doubling over for a moment before standing again, insisting he was fine, and he closed the door behind him. The shock of pain was nothing compared to the surprise of seeing her again, of her being in his quarters. Sad eyes softened as he watched her, and he extended a hand to help her up from the floor, unsure if she would take it. It was complicated, looking at it from where he stood, her being his Anna Loring but him not her Ray Palmer. Would she love him now, this version of him, if given the opportunity?
It was hard to accept the thought that she might not, that he might have become someone she would no longer marry. How was that fair, when in reality all of this was for her? Everything he had done since her death was out of love for her, out of a steely unwillingness to let her go. “I didn’t,” he argued weakly. He hadn’t seen her, not for years, and he wouldn’t fool her into thinking he was the Ray Palmer she knew and loved, she deserved better than that. “I love you to death too, which is why... we need to talk.” If he could have proposed again to her, right there, he would have, without hesitation.
If he could have, he would have kept her, not let her go. But she needed to go back to what would become Star City. In order to save the future, he had to let her go back to die. Stomach uneasy, he approached his bed, hesitantly sitting on the edge and patting the space beside her to ask her to follow. What could he even say to her now? There was nothing that could magically have this all make sense, to fix it all. “Anna, I — I’m... in trouble, and it’s... putting you in danger. I need to know you’ll stay here, stay safe.”

Finding a balance was near impossible, an inevitability of their unique situation. He expected some trouble after reviving Anna, after changing his past and their future. In the moment, it had been an easy decision to make. Save her, hurt less. What he hadn’t considered was his relationship with Kendra, not because it wasn’t important but because Anna was there and he didn’t have enough time to consider all eventualities. There was a timeframe and he had run its course, only having moments to decide his actions. Now, he knew, he should have prepared himself for this ending.
A frown settled on his face, expression contorted by his own pain. She hurt so much and there was nothing he could do. “Anna!” he called, a hand quickly coming to rest on her back as if trying to be a comfort to her. “Hey, hey, it’s okay, don’t — don’t cry, please.” Swallowing the lump in his throat, he pulled her in for a hug, carding his fingers through her hair trying to make whatever this was better. “What’s going on? You can tell me, I’m right here.”
