Remembering Annie Young

Former Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) Commissioner Annie Young was known for her bluntness and her effectiveness. For nearly 30 years she played a role in the park system--promoting park conservation and sustainability, fighting against environmental concerns like herbicides and use of rubber in fields and playgrounds, and she was a voice for labor issues, among other causes. Young retired from the MPRB Board of Commissioners in December 2017 due to health issues, after serving as a Commissioner At Large since January 1990. The DFL, later Green Party member, was one of the two longest-serving Commissioners in Board history. She died on Monday, January 22, 2018, at the age of 75.

In 1993, Young served as a consultant and project manager for the newly formed Green Institute--a nonprofit community economic development organization in Minneapolis. The organization was formed as the result of an environmental justice movement against the siting of a large garbage transfer station in a residential area of the Phillips neighborhood, where Young resided. Phillips residents prevailed and ultimately developed a solution for a more sustainable solution--an energy efficient commercial facility. Young was instrumental in coordinating the donation of Green Institute papers to the Hennepin County Library Special Collections.
