While I absolutely hate “uwu softboy” Kakyoin so much, I think interpreting him as entirely cruel, to anyone but especially to Polnareff, is also pretty diminishing to his character. Kakyoin’s not always nice to Polnareff by any means, but I really don’t think Polnareff would put up with his rudeness if he was that unpleasant all the time. Insults and poking fun are likely a part of their dynamic, but I don’t think it’s the full extent of it or entirely one-sided. Kakyoin has been shown to have a somewhat similar sense of humor to Polnareff with the hand gestures scene and there’s got to be a sense of protectiveness they both feel for eachother for their own reasons beyond just being on the same team (at least on Polnareff’s end).
I wish there was more content of them just like, enjoying eachother’s company or maybe even Polnareff getting back at Kakyoin a bit. But it seems like the only aspect of their dynamic people want to portray is Kakyoin being an ass to Polnareff and it just feels very over-done to me. I can still enjoy it in a lot of instances, but after a while it just gets tiring.
