An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
finally finished & posted a double-chapter update (9 & 10) for my post-SA2 Sonadow multi-chapter fic, singularity! chapter 10 is very long (almost 20k words), but hopefully it makes up for those years of no updates before ch. 8.
please check it out if you like mutual pining idiocy, astrophysics as extended metaphor, long drawn-out canon rewrites, and interwoven game elements with a touch of early 00s vague anachronisms.
Something small and cold taps him on the arm—and the shoulder—and a quill, then another, and soon there's a gentle chorus of the small, cold tappings and they become just a tiny bit bigger and somehow feel softer for it.
Rain.
Shadow stops and looks up.
The falling droplets come down in ribbons, seeming to form long, broken lines on the way down. Staring directly upward makes him vaguely dizzy, dizzier the longer he looks, but the sight is too mesmerizing to turn away. The sky is such a gentle blend of cloud and atmosphere, diaphanous shapes in arrays of grey and off-white with splotches of hazy blue showing where the cloud cover thins in the rare spot—but more often the blue lends itself to the white and grey of the clouds and the effect is that of mixed paint, a mixture into a soft bluish-grey that reminds him of agate cores, does not hurt his eyes the way the naked daytime sky does, and the raindrops are near-black streaks running down the canvas, thin lines etched with the edge of a palette knife.
Soon enough the whole painting is too much and he's too dizzy and Shadow finally looks away.
Stands there in the middle of the greenery and flora and earth and cannot move his legs.
Can barely breathe.
Overwhelmed.

Serenity (/səˈrenədē/) is:
his beloved’s hand in his own
a contented sigh, a quiet giggle
the state of being
alive,
together,
intertwined
calm,
resting in his lap
watching the clouds
listening to his voice
peaceful,
a passing breeze, a whispered word
I feel you in the wind
even when you aren’t around
and untroubled.
close enough their souls touch
lips brushed against lips
a finger against his face
Synonyms: composure,
two quickly-beating hearts
his hand through blue quills
the other held tender
tranquility,
a kiss on the cheek,
a kiss on the lips
on the wrist, the arm, the forehead
ease,
I see you in the stars
a reply from the wind
even when you’re not around
poise,
close enough they could be one
a contented sigh, a quiet giggle
equanimity.
the static in his head clears
the anxiety melts away
the ache eases
I wrote a short little sonadow thing (you can also read it on AO3)
They’d never actually said it to each other.
So they’d never actually said they loved each other, but god, they did.
They’d never actually said it to each other.
Maybe it was because they didn’t really know how. One, soft-spoken and precise with his words; the other, outspoken but never about emotion; both still learning how to be vulnerable, still not yet very good at it.
Shadow, in a way, had been genetically engineered for love. He was the product of love, albeit of the misplaced sort; a grandfather’s desire to save his ailing granddaughter, allowing him to cross ethical lines until it backfired spectacularly and cost him everything. Shadow had been engineered for the type of love that consumed selfishly and didn’t care who it hurt as long as it accomplished a misguided goal, but never once uttered the word itself.
Sonic, too, was an exemplification of love, of show, don’t tell. Save everyone, hurt no one who doesn’t deserve it, but for god’s sake, never say it. Flash your friends a thumbs up and grin before disappearing for days at a time, knowing they know you’ll be back when it’s right. Push yourself beyond the limits of self-sacrificing, assuming it’s enough to never have to say it.
So they weren’t very good at being vulnerable, but god, there were moments.
The moments when Sonic would find a trio of white flowers tied neatly with a red ribbon on his lap after a nap in the shade; the moments when Shadow caught a glimpse of the blue hedgehog fiddling with the ring around his wrist before stealing a glance at him.
The moments when Sonic thanked every star that Shadow was still here.
The moments when Shadow smiled back.
So they’d never actually said they loved each other, but god, they did.
i write a lot of drabbles and one-shots, especially about sonapie, and have recently compiled some of those into an ongoing collection entitled Lemon Sorbet! the great thing about this compilation is that if you’ve read Pinkie Pie Swear, the ficlets are even sweeter – and if you haven’t, they still read fine alone!
and a HUGE thank-you to mithridate/theriaque for again allowing her lovely art to grace my words just perfectly!
