The Blue Star on That Day by Aoikani
damn, bummer about the keroro land magazines. i mostly wanted to see the stuff about garuru mentoring kururu, but obviously that was a pretty japanese exclusive tidbit. thank you for the information though! maybe with a bit more digging i'll be able to find something more of it online.
No prob! Yeah the Garuru and Kururu thing is actually a very popular dynamic in the Japanese fandom, but all I could really find besides the one blurry picture from Keroro Land that circulates often is a Yahoo answer about it and the scant details from the cards. I don’t know if Garuru actually mentored Kururu outside the Keron Star Contest itself—from what I can gather he was a corporal at the time who was tasked with being the “watchman” for the competition by basically being Kururu’s right-hand man/guard since Kururu was a kid major (at the time he was probably a few years older than Tamama’s present age if I had to guess since he’s still old enough to have met Keroro and the others as kids). But fanon was super into it and there’s a lot of headcanons/fanart about Garuru training or even babysitting Kururu. I’ve also heard the claim that Kururu fixed the competition results so Keroro would win and I can’t actually find a source in Japanese for that (maybe the second code card?) but that’s definitely interesting if true. Kururu basically created the Keroro Platoon if that’s the case :P
I’ve started adding a little bit more to the spreadsheet so I’ll probably just keep plugging at what we have (even though it isn’t that much) whenever I get the energy.

have you translated any of the anokoro stuff at all? apparently theres some interesting stuff attached to them and theres a few scanned online
Actually it’s really funny you ask because I have! And I completely neglected talking about it here oops
A short while ago someone in a Keroro discord server I’m in sent some scans of the cards so I translated whatever they had. I know there’s a ton more so if you can point me in the direction of more clean scans that’d be great. These are all character profile cards of the orikero submitted to Keroro Land that were incorporated into the “Competition for the Keron Star” story. The progression of the story is basically told in pieces through these collectible cards so you’re really supposed to have all or at least most of them, so the more the merrier. The letters in the white boxes are supposed to spell out some kind of secret code on a Kururu card (I did see a picture of that card but don’t think it was HQ) but of course you’d need all of them to make any sense of it.
I’ve put all the translations in a spreadsheet here. It’s not much atm but it’s set up so I can just keep adding more to it later. Hopefully the way I did it is easy enough to read. So yeah if anybody has good scans of these send em my way!
i know there are a few nice card scans on the keroro wiki page for anokoro that arent on your spreadsheet. not sure if you knew about it but they just werent relevant, but i'll point it out just in case. and on a related note, are there any scans of keroro land available at all? i cant find any at all other than the tiny amount on its wiki page, they feel like a myth to me at this point...
Hooo those are some pretty nice scans though! Didn’t see them before but I’ll probably work on incorporating them because they’re very clean. And it looks like they documented the secret letters too, and I dug up the pic I found of the Kururu code card from season 1 so that can be decoded! Don’t know about season two’s though sadly. As for the magazine, unfortunately I don’t know of any full issue scans. They did release all the 4koma strips from the magazine in bound volumes, though, of which I have six out of the seven released (never got around to scanning them because they’re like 700 pages’ worth but maybe someday). Those aren’t too hard to find still. As for the actual issues there are still a few resellings on mercari, rakuten etc. but yeah, no scans online. I know it’s a really cryptic era of the series history if you weren’t in Japan while it was happening!
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE LORE...
