I named my MC 'Calum'! It means "dove" in Scottish Gaelic, from Latin "Columba". 🕊️
Doves are considered as birds of good fortune in many cultures and religions:
- a symbol of the Holy Spirit, the Baptism of Jesus, and a messenger of good news/blessings upon men by God in Christianity— in Orthodox Christianity, doves are also believed to be the incarnation of a recently deceased person's soul
- the bringer of the first sign of life (an olive branch) and God guiding Noah's Ark to the land after the Flood, and a symbol of the human soul (which is said to "chirp") in Judaism. It was also believed the choosing of a bitter food like an olive leaf meant doves served God than man
- associated with Love Deities like Ishtar and Aphrodite, both goddesses also having an association with War (more the former than the latter. see: Aphrodite Areia): a more direct war connection comes in the form of Hachiman from Japanese mythology: the (syncretic) Deity of War and Archery.
Aphrodite's main festival would also require her altars to be cleaned with the blood of a sacrificed dove (👀)
- helping, with a spider, Prophet Muhammad to hide from his murderous pursuers in a cave by making a nest and laying eggs in it by the entrance in Islam: pursuers thought the nest and the spider web would have been disturbed visibly if someone entered the cave, and so left it alone
- white doves are technically common pigeons with white privilege: pigeons have been domesticated by humans for many purposes, most importantly as homing/war pigeons as a way of fast communication. They are also equally derided for being "rats with wings" in cities, viewed as carriers of disease. Most people also tend to believe doves and pigeons are different bird species (ie. me about a couple years ago) instead of white doves being domestic pigeons, which is a subspecies of rock doves or "common pigeons"
- symbol of peace and pacifism in art and politics
Love all these doves facts. Also it’s actually a very good name! Thematically it fits with religious connotations and the concept of a soul. And it does fit in with the other siblings names as it is an old fashioned name and it’s strong and I’ve always thought that MC regardless of anything is very strong💜 (with all the things they’ve endured in their short life they’d have to be)
