About you mentioning a parallel to Azazel, do you think they might bring him back at some point? Personally I would love that as he's such a great villain, and I get the feeling he's one of the only monsters Dean and Sam really truly fear

I think - and I’m going to quote Jim Beaver here - “anything’s possible”. :) Given how this season is strictured around the premise of re-addressing the past I think it would make perfect sense to come back into the picture whether in a memory or some other way. It may also be that when Dean killed Death some sort of realm collapsed with it. Meaning that Death himself was sort of a lock and key character too and that possibly with him dissolving into nothingsness the barrier that he himself was to keep that realm close of and intact was torn down right with him. I’d call that the otherside or limbo, the place where spirits, demons and angels go when they die for example. So if something like that was the case there would be endless possibilities of dead characters to come back without messing up canon. Though of course I guess people would call it a cheap way to bring beloved characters back.
I sure as hell would love to see Azazel back or Alistair or think Zachariah. There were a lot of awesome bad guys on this show, so… And almost all of these mentioned would relate back perfectly to all three main charactera and would make them have to take a look at their past.
