The Scotsman

My local Scotsman1 lives just around the corner from me. I hear him and his friends laughing and talking as I walk by, and on some nights their laughter and talking spills out on to the street and I can hear them from the comfort of my own sofa.

Although he wears a kilt, looks rather dishevelled and clearly likes a drink (not that there is anything inherently 'Scottish' about any of those things), the Scotsman is no more Scottish than I am (cross-dressing and probable alcoholism aside). In fact, considering the local demographics, I suspect he originates from the Punjab. But I doubt you could get away with calling him 'The Indian.'

I see the Scotsman every time I walk to the station to catch a train into London to meet people from teh internets, or when I go to my voluntary work, or to teach my star pupil how to play 'Super Danny Welbeck' on his three-quarter size guitar2, or when I'm abducted by aliens. The only time I don't see him is on those rare occasions I turn the other way and go for a walk up the canal. I see the Scotsman most days of my life, and yet I've never said hello (other than that one time when I wanted to borrow a garden spade for my garden3).
