Electric guitar: On a scale of 1-5, how rebellious are you?
Ace: “Oh, I’m super rebellious!! You better believe it! Love being a shit stirrer, I love, uh… *checks smudged writing on hand* ‘showing a desire to resist authority, control, or convention’. Yeah, fuck all those things! As long as nobody gets hurt, I mean. That’s important. Put me down as a… uh… a three.”
Snake: “A sssolid four. But I think that jussst kind of comesss with the territory, to be honessst. Being queer often forcesss you to rebel againssst sssocietal expectationsss. Sssometimesss rebellion meansss sssurvival.”
Ukulele: Would you consider yourself more ‘hipster’ or ‘basic’?
Snake: “Probably hipssster. But I feel like that getsss harder to define all the time… I dunno, I’d rather be sssomething more like sssoft-grunge, or punk.”
Ace: “I’m just a fucking disaster–”
Ace: “– but I agree with San. It’s too hard to define either of those labels. I just want to be a hot mess. ‘Only 90s kids remember’. That’s the aesthetic, babey.”
Harmonica: How old were you when you first played an instrument?
Ace: “Thirteen. My brother Tony and I used to jam together to records and tapes when our parents were out. He got a guitar one year for his birthday, and we both tried to learn it together. Without lessons we both sounded like absolute trash, but we had way too much fun messing around to really care. He’s the one who got me stoked on playing bass in the first place…”
Snake: “I tried playing mussic when I wass about ssseven, but I wasssn’t really good with it. My mom would play piano sssometimesss. She tried to teach me, but I never really liked playing, I jussst liked lissstening.”
