kind words for nothing new by ant dickinson!
the kindness comes from netlabelism!
There’s no way around it: pianos were harmed in the making of this music. There are four tracks that form the core of “Nothing New” that were played on a piano that spent many months out in a field near Llangollen, Wales. Unprotected and exposed to the elements (heavy rains, snow, large temperature swings), the piano suffered an inevitable breakdown. Dickinson visited regularly and improvised music on the piano in whatever condition it was found.
This is not, however, just a collection of aimless abstract noise. He does great job finding a way to play the piano in its diminishing condition, pulling together interesting tracks that are challenging but with accessible underlying elements and melodies. You can feel badly for the piano that gave its all for these songs, but you will hear that it was for a noble cause.

GIG LOG :: SWEDISH ENERGIES LONDON - EMS 50 FEAT. MATS GUSTAFSSON & THURSTON MOORE, SEWER ELECTION & FREDERIKKE HOFFMEIER, HANNA HARTMAN, CHRISTINE ABDELNOUR & JOACHIM NORDWALL, VINYL TERROR & HORROR, ANT DICKINSON
Mats Gustafsson & Thurston Moore at Cafe Oto
Artists: Mats Gustafsson & Thurston Moore Date: 08 March 2014 Venue: Cafe Oto, London Description: Very tense and powerful set, like a constant physical release of energy. Moore was often seen playing his battered electric guitar intuitively with his eyes closed while Gustafsson sweated heavily from the immense workout with his saxophone and electronic equipment. Rating: 7.5/10
Artists: Sewer Election & Frederikke Hoffmeier Date: 08 March 2014 Venue: Cafe Oto, London Description: Slow-building electronic noise composition with an intense climax and Frederikke Hoffmeier's repetitive lyrics providing a focal point in the mix. Rating: 7/10
Artist: Hanna Hartman Date: 08 March 2014 Venue: Cafe Oto, London Description: Modern composition made from live sounds created with string, metal bolts and tubes, a ball in a bowl of flour, air being blown through plastic tubes into liquid filled bottles, and more. Interesting to watch. Rating: 6.5/10
Artists: Joachim Nordwall & Christine Abdelnour Date: 08 March 2014 Venue: Cafe Oto, London Description: Experimental exploration of a saxophone by Abdelnour - mostly without any real tone being produced and with part of the set played without a mouthpiece and at other times with a bottle stuck inside the instrument's bell. Very tense and great performance tied together by Nordwall's rumbling low-end and minimalist electronics. Rating: 7.5/10
Artists: Vinyl Terror & Horror Date: 08 March 2014 Venue: Cafe Oto, London Description: Haunting duo performance created with multiple costumized turntables and vinyl records in various states of destruction being subjected to live manipulation. Fascinating both to listen to and watch. Rating: 7.5/10
Artist: Ant Dickinson Date: 08 March 2014 Venue: Cafe Oto, London Description: Melancholic live piano performance mixed and juxtaposed with pre-recorded audio-visual footage of a piano being destroyed with hammers, drills, etc. Thought provoking. Rating: 7/10
