B-Horror Movie of the day: Sharknado (2013)
The coasts of California, a paradise on Earth for the summer vacation. Yet even a place like this can be hit by bad weather and disastrous situations. However, none have ever been this bad. The nightmare, the terror! When nature combines the worst it can offer into the hellish combination that is a... shark infested tornado? Wait, no. that can't- Oh, apparently that is the movie. Hoo-boy... What can I really say about this Syfy original directed by Anthony C. Ferrante? If the title alone didn't give away the unashamed level of stupidity to be found in this movie, I don't know what to tell you other than it's somehow dumber than expected and PROUD of it, ictiologists be damned. We have effectively flying sharks that can survive on land, swallow people whole and withstand building shattering winds; all for the sole purpose of making these creatures act like dicks to humans. So when the stock, paper thin survivors manage to do comparatively stupid awesome things to defend themselves, you cheer. And cheer you do because, for all the idiocy in display this movie does get the basics right enough to know what it's working with. Sure, Fin, Nova, April and the rest aren't exactly deep, but they're charismatic enough in the cheesy and equally stupid one liners they tend to spout so you're eventually reeled in(pun somewhat intended) to the overwhelming absurdity in display. And what a view you get with that classic, low budget SyFy charm of having somewhat poor, cheap cameras and even cheaper CGI, which just pushes the silliness even further. It has it all: bikinis, chainsaws, physics defying displays of badassery (citation needed) and romances that happen in a blink of a second because, well, every good movie needs a kiss! It's effectively what would happen if a disaster movie series did the kind of series escalation from The Fast and the Furious, just skipping the first nine boring movies.
