I know this has most likely been said before but like... I keep thinking about Joe and Vito's relationship before and during his time over back in Italy during the war like... Joe must've felt so guilty, in his mind its his fault Vito is even other there risking his neck, and saying goodbye to him knowing he might never come back its 😭 OH IM SO UNWELL, but like... during the time Vito isn't there I can see Joe being in close/or the closest he can get with the Scaletta Family, making sure Frankie is alright and Maria is okay, I kinda headcanon this as to why Maria has Joe's phone number, since Vito is surprised she even has it despite finding Joe a bad influence </3
I think she definitely knows Joe was trying to support the family and she respected that, but, well Joe is Joe, aha. He's just a guy who likes to do the things he does, ain't no changing it. But I think there was still that respect there, enough for a phone number at least! Can see Frankie and Joe becoming friends, having a shoulder to talk to about the war and life, go get a drink or something to just... chat. I think he would admit his guilts surrounding the circumstances of what happened to Vito to her eventually, but I can see Frankie kinda acknowledging that he's trying to fix the mistake he did, I suppose?
AND WHEN VITO COMES BACK?? Joe hints to Vito that he 'has his sources' to figure out that Vito was coming home, so you're telling me he was constantly and consistently getting someone to check on Vito?? Make sure he was still alive?? Make sure he was okay?? AUGH!! When he gets the news he is on his way, I think he was told that he was coming home on leave because of an injury, and he is.... dreading the worst. You can SEE how anxious he is at the train station as he's waiting for Vito, and I think that's down to the fear of Vito having a grudge against him with what happened, afraid that the whole situation ruined what close nit friendship they had, but also the state he could see him in. I can imagine other soldiers that got let off coming back with some grizzly injuries and Joe can't shift the idea of something that bad happening to his best friend, because of HIM. (YES, I know there's like... cops there and he's actively avoiding their gaze too but like... the idea is THERE AND IM GRABBING IT)
Joe doing everything in his power to keep Vito home? Because he CAN now, he has that pocket of influence and power over the city now, has the connections and just... look I just wanna squish these two boys, they're so tied together, you can't have one without the other. I think in a way when they're separated it like a half is missing but idk... they're just so dear to me </3
Please please, I'd love a good ramble if you have any opinions on this through dms or just in the comments, I'm in desperate need for Mafia conversation about these two and the supporting cast, I've had no ones and I need to stop having 2am rambles to myself!!
