Let’s face it: we’ve all lost immeasurable time due to ads.
I’m anti ad and anti-consumerism and this is one way I reclaim my time during an “ad break.”
Turn it over, turn it down down, or just turn it off: if I’m using my phone and there is no option to skip immediately, I turn my phone over, turn the volume down, and sometimes even just turn the whole application off itself. Whatever stops the ad the quickest.
I then pause, and take some deep breaths. I’m mindful of my body and I ask myself some questions like, do I like what I have been seeing? How does it make me feel? Do I need to take a break? Etc… I do this for about 30 seconds.
At that point I can usually close the ad, and I’m already more connected with myself and have decided if I’ve had enough screen time for the day, or maybe I’ve remembered there may have been other things I wanted to do with my time other than scrolling.
Taking a little pause like this is such a great way to reclaim time that is being wasted/taken from us by rampant ads. Every second of our free time counts, so, so much. Especially in a late stage capitalist society where a 5 day, 40 hour work week is the norm, and is often exceeded, just to make ends meet.
