ipratropium bromide (Atrovent)
On the bronchial tree are receptors for acetylcholine (neurotransmitter for Parasympathetic Nervous System). Acetylcholine causes bronchial constriction and narrowing of the airway. Atrovent blocks the action of acetylcholine.
Onset: slow and action prolonged; used for prevention and not acute exacerbations.
Side Effects: dry mouth/throat, gastrointestinal distress, HA, cough, anxiety
Many patients benefit from a beta-2 agonist and anticholinergic agent combination
Combivent: albuterol and ipratropium bromide
