The 'Anti-Sketchbook'

Sketchbooks undeniably played a huge role in art-related courses throughout secondary school - the love of a blank white canvas as a starting point was, as probably agreed by most art schools, way over-used. It meant our creativity could only extend to the limits of mostly 2D coloured paper and not much resources and aid was put into supporting other creative projects.

But in order to be sketchbook-free, we must first understand what exactly a sketchbook is - defined by Oxford Dictionary as 'a pad of drawing paper for sketching on' where often the idea is to keep the papers compiled (whether in a particular order or arbitrarily). This in itself limits to firstly 2D pieces only but also hinders the use of for example videos in our sketchbooks, which in reality could more accurately represent certain themes or ideas (hence this blog with various capabilities).

During the first few weeks of my foundation year, we were encouraged to think about what a casual sketchbook could become were we to add for instance senses to it - texture, sound, smell. And the more I thought about it, the closer I was to alternative forms, perhaps digital to incorporate sound or sculptural for texture - but ultimately, I began to appreciate this whole 'Anti-Sketchbook Movement' a lot more.
