-------------------------------------------- It was the worst tragedy Albania witnessed after the fall of Communism. 23 people including 10 children (10 - 16 years old) lost their life on April 29th, 1997 on the Military Tunnels in Selicë village in Mat District. Inside the tunnels were shells, weapons and explosive. The kids were used at that time to crawl down the tunnels from the ventilations spots to get the ammunitions, they used candles to light up the way but that caused the horrific tragedy, the ammunition inside exploded killing everyone and partially collapsing the tunnel. 8 of 21 bodies were never found and the tunnel was closed by the Defense Ministry for over 20 years. 3 months ago (on June 2018) the tunnel was reopened by the Ministry to clean up the remaining ammunition inside. Yesterday the military found the remains of a man during the process of digging to remove shells. It’s suspected that the bones belong to the victims of the 1997 tragedy but a DNA test is needed. Today I was inside the tunnel with my colleagues from Report TV, the first ever journalists (after the tunnel was reopened) to report on this story from the ground zero (the very exact place where it all happened). Inside the tunnels were endless shells that were still active so we had to wear the bombproof vests.
