Who Is The Doomer? - Dealing With An Age Of Hopelessness
How I relate to the writing of Marjane Satrapi and Persepolis
Marji’s story is truly incredible, I personally learned a lot about the history of the revolution and how it came to be and why it took place. Of course, we read the story through the eyes of a Marji and she twisted her own style into the book and personally I can relate to chapters like when the F-14’s and the chapter on there were bombings taken place. In Sri Lanka when I was younger there was a civil war taken place years before I was born of course and incidents happen the war escalated and de-escalated between 2000 and 2009. When in 2009 the war stopped. But I do remember one occurrence it was when I was in school and a couple of suicide bombers rigged a couple fishing boats and bombed the navy harbour close to where I lived, Since we lived so close to the ocean and close to the base you could hear the shock waves of the bomb going off , I remember Jets flying over and a couple of attack helicopters flying over the school and we had armed infantry at the school protecting the front gates of the school gates this was back in 2006 when I was pretty young and I don’t remember much and don’t want to remeber much, but I remember my dad used the back entrance of the school and picked me up from there in my grandpa’s black truck and we got home safe. Reading through Persepolis reminded me of the similar situation I was in at the same time how I naive I was to the situation going on, and I didn't really understand what was happening till I was a bit older, There were bombings and fighting up north of Sri Lanka and I was safe I remember hearing stories of kids getting kidnapped to be trained as child soldiers for the “rebels.” and other stories I rather not go too much into detail and how I much I relate to the book is pretty insane because I was also the kid who in a “high-class” family like Marji so we were very lucky. Overall the book was very interesting to read and her story was well written and illustrated by Marjane and I definitely would like to read the rest of her books.
Below I linked two articles about the war that took place in Sri Lanka if you are interested to read on about it.
