The Drip Rifle At Gallipoli

The Anzacs used improvised self-firing rifles to deceive Ottoman forces during their evacuation from Gallipoli in December 1915. Invented by Lance-Corporal William Scurry, 7th Battalion, AIF, these ‘drip’ or ‘pop off’ rifles fired at intervals to convince the Ottomans that the Anzacs still occupied their trenches.

The drip rifle incorporated two ration tins. The top one was filled with water, while the empty bottom one was attached to the trigger by a piece of string or wire. Before leaving, a soldier punched a small hole in the upper tin to allow water to trickle into the lower one, which eventually toppled over, pulling the trigger.

Lancashire Fusiliers on a boat to Gallipoli in May 1915. The Gallipoli Campaign was highly underestimated by the Allies, and ended up being a great disaster in World War One. They relied very heavily on the navial support, and in consequence most infantry soldiers never made it much past the beach. It was carried out between 25th April 1915 and 9th January 1916 on the Gallipoli peninsula in the Ottoman Empire

The #ANZACMemorial’s new extension is curiously ambivalent to axis, alternating between enabling and obstructing passage along it; the cut through is reminiscent of #CommonwealthPlace in Canberra (Durbach Block, 2002), the oculus similar to that proposed for the Canberra #AustralianWarMemorial entry extension (Scott Carver, 2019, yet to be built).
