Chapter 1 here.
...
“What’s a pretty girl like you doing in a place like this?” The Kree sneered at her, his hand coming to rest on her thigh.
“Move your hand, or you will lose your hand.” She said, her voice cold.
He chuckled, his rank breath surrounding her. “Don’t play shy girl, I’ve been watching you. You’re here alone like me,” he squeezed her thigh. “Let me buy you a drink.”
“I said,” she turned to him, piercing green eyes passive, “move your hand, or you will lose your hand.”
“And what if I don’t?” He smirked, snaking his hand further up her leg.
In a second he was on the floor, screaming in pain as he held his bleeding stump. “You bitch! My fucking hand- you took my fucking hand!”
She calmly finished her drink then got up, gingerly stepping around the severed blue appendage before walking to the bar, flicking the blood off her katana and sliding it back into its sheath. She sent some extra credits to the barkeep for the trouble, nodding their way as she headed to the back of the bar.
She strode to the door guarded by a pair of calurnian females.
“It’s been five days. Is he in?” She nodded towards the door, her curls bouncing as she looked to the calurnian.
“No. But his apprentice is,” the taller of them said as the doorway opened behind her.
“I suppose that’ll have to do.” She passed through the doorway, greeted by a room full of cases containing many things, both living and dead. She weaved her way through the displays towards the classical music coming from the centre of the room.
“Kai, I presume?” A voice asked, the accent unfamiliar.
She made her way around the large case holding the skeletal remains of what seemed to be a giant rodent to see the back of a man standing at the desk. His hair was silver and slicked back against his head, his suit finely tailored and pressed.
He turned to her, his eyes a striking blue- almost too blue. He was attractive, high cheekbones and wide eyes, his smile that of a salesman with nothing to lose.
“Yes. And you are?”
He smiled at her, “they call me Birger,” he bowed. “Happy to be of service.”
“How do you know the collector? I’ve heard he always works alone.” She stepped closer to him, her green eyes taking him in. Something wasn’t right here, she could tell.
“We’ve known each other for a long time.” He kept the pleasant smile on his face, his hands dipping into his pockets.
“We used to work quite closely actually. Though in recent times I’ve found myself overwhelmed with acquisitions.” He paced lightly in front of her, his eyes locked with her own. There was something so familiar about his eyes- no, the look behind them, the feeling…
Her thoughts were interrupted with the sound of something crashing towards the back of the room. “What was that?” She asked, drawing her katana and walking towards the man.
He threw his hands up, panicked. “I don’t know- I swear. It’s just you and I in here, no one else.”
She raised an eyebrow at him before turning in the general direction of the sound, her katana at the ready. “Come with me,” she motioned over her shoulder for him to follow as she crept between display cases.
“R-really, there should be no one here to disturb us.” He tried again, the nerves clear in his voice.
“No harm in checking,” she smiled over her shoulder as she reached a closed door. Pressing the lock button the door slid open to reveal a lightless room, broken glass strewn on the floor. Her brow furrowed as she entered the room, attempting to make out a shape in the dark. Suddenly the lights flickered on and the door shut.
She turned quickly to face the door, though Birger was nowhere to be seen. She pressed the button a few times but the door wouldn’t budge. “Fuck,” she whispered as she turned back around and stepped cautiously into the next room.
She was met with the sight of a tall, lithe figure leaning up against the far wall, his dark curls swept back from his face. He pushed off his post, his blue-green gaze running her over, cold as ice.
“Hello little one,” his voice was pure venom. “You’ve been a very bad girl.”
...
She should have been long gone by now.
She was cutting it close, but she’d had a hard time willing herself to slip from his arms. She sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes running over his peaceful face, his hair splayed out across the pillow, illuminated green by the brightening sky. She was listening to his breath, finding a sort of comfort in the way his chest rose and fell as he slept, his long eyelashes resting against his cheek.
She hadn’t expected him to be this gorgeous. She hadn’t expected him to know her body so well- well enough to pull orgasm after orgasm from her last night, giving her the best sex she’s had… well, ever. Fuck, she hadn’t expected to sleep with him at all.
She was expecting a brute, or a slimy, smarmy idiot. She could handle herself around people like that- they were easy to trick, and usually went down a lot faster after drinking Titan-style liquor. But he was different- obviously powerful but intelligent, skilled, and witty. He gave her his full attention last night, making her truly feel seen and heard, even though she fed him half-truths. It was the first time she’d felt a real connection with someone in years and it seemed like he felt it too.
“He doesn’t know you,” she whispered to herself. Taking a deep breath she got up from the bed, chancing one last glance towards him before closing the door.
She rounded the corner and pulled the dirt-encrusted tarp off her ship- Lark, her baby. She slid her hand along the side before opening the door and stepping in.
Making her way up to the cockpit she pulled the glowing blue cube from her satchel, smiling a little as she remembered the sound he’d made when he came down her throat and she’d retrieved the cube from his pocket. Though he was clearly different from her usual targets she’d quickly had him wrapped around her little finger last night, and she had to admit she was proud of it.
He’d clearly had a lot of lovers in the past though she’d still been able to fool him, get him into bed and take what she needed. She thought of him waking up alone and confused and her heart fell though she quickly steeled herself. “You’re not doing this for you. Remember, it’s for her,” she chastised herself.
She fell into her seat and readjusted the tiny photo clipped to her dashboard, the small girls with golden skin and green eyes from another time smiling up at her earnestly. “For her,” she said aloud once more before pushing the ignition and taking off without looking back.
...
It took her a week to track down her intended buyer. She visited several high end dealers, though none could give her what she was looking for. Unfortunately the tip she’d received on her target didn’t include one for passing it off to the right seller. Finally getting a lead at one of the bars on Kitson, she made her way to Knowhere only to be met with another dissapointment- the collector was out until further notice.
She’d decided to stay, Lark needed some repairs and she knew she could find them for cheap at the junk shop. She checked in each day, her thoughts only straying to Loki once or twice. How long before he figured it out? Would he be upset with her? Track her as she’d tracked him? He seemed capable but she doubted she’d be faced with him before the sale went through- she’d left him stranded and shipless.
...
She held her katana at the ready, holding herself perfectly still as he stepped closer.
“You know,” he drawled, gesticulating with his hands, “it takes a special kind to trick me.” He smirked, “and to pickpocket me- the gall to even think of it. I have to admit, I’m impressed.” He tilted his head in acknowledgement.
“Though I’m afraid I’m quite possessive of what’s mine,” his tone darkened along with his gaze as he took another step forward. “That said, I’m willing to give you a chance. Give me the tesseract and I’ll let you walk free,” he raised an eyebrow with his words, observing her carefully.
“I can’t do that,” she said, her pulse racing in anticipation.
“She speaks! Well you certainly can’t blame a gentleman for trying,” he smiled ruefully his hands open by his sides. He made a quick movement, pulling two daggers from thin air in either hand and lunged towards her, one blade hitting her own as she stepped back.
She pushed her blade forward, forcing his arm backwards before taking a few steps back. “Who are you?” He smiled, his head tilted and brows furrowed as he circled her.
“I told you, my name Kailani,” she moved forward, crouching to swing at his feet. He deftly jumped back from her blade and she smirked up at him, “but friends call me Kai.”
She rose and they circled each other once more, eyes locked. “So was the rest a ruse then?” He raised his brow, his jaw clenching.
“Some parts,” she smiled innocently, peering up at him under her lashes. “I’ll do whatever you want me to,” she repeated what she’d told him just a week ago, voice and all.
He chuckled, shaking his head. “And when you came on my cock, screaming my name- what was that?”
She felt herself blush- fuck. What was that? She’d been trying to answer that question herself all week. She glanced down momentarily, unable to meet his gaze and he pounced on her, pushing her up against the wall. He held a dagger at her throat, his strong arm holding her chest to the cool, hard surface. She could feel the very tip of the other blade against her ribs, his thigh between her legs.
“Drop it,” he said, his head tilted so he looked down his nose at her. His breath was warm over her face, and she was ashamed to feel herself growing wet right where his thigh held her in place. She took a moment to study his face, deciding not to test him when she felt the blade of the dagger against her throat press ever so gently on her skin. Sighing, she dropped her weapon, the katana clattering to the ground before he kicked it away.
“So much better when you listen, isn’t it?” He grinned at her, his eyes briefly falling to her lips as she panted. “Now,” he tilted his head downwards to capture her gaze, “where is the tesseract?”
She laughed, out of breath. “Maybe we can do some knife play next time.”
He raised an eyebrow, “bold words for such a pretty little thing.”
“You don’t know me,” she narrowed her eyes up at him, “you just fucked me.”
He looked at her a few moments, the press of the daggers against her skin lightening. “You’re right. I don’t know you.” He seemed almost hurt by what she said- almost. Before she could think too much of it his expression quickly changed to sinister and he leaned in to her, his lips against her ear. “Stop changing the subject, Kai. Give me the tesseract or I’ll spend the next week stripping both you and your ship naked to find it.”
She shivered and the memory of her fully nude, riding his thigh as he guided her against him came to mind. Her thighs twitched around him involuntarily, her breathing more laboured than before.
He faced her once more, his eyes dark, his smile turned filthy. “Oh, you dirty little thing. You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
She frowned at him, though no words came to her in response. She nibbled on the inside of her cheek as she tried to calm herself down. Everything about him made her crave him, his voice, his eyes, his gorgeous face, the way he towered over her, holding her firmly against the wall.
“Tell you what,” his voice was honey now, his thigh pressing harder between her legs. “Give me the tesseract and I’ll see what I can do.”
She huffed then quickly brought her knee up, hitting him in the groin. He fell forward, the knife tips edging away from her. She pushed him away from her and twisted, taking the knife at her waist from his fingers. He moved to grab her, his free hand coming to touch her shoulder. She deftly sliced at his arm and ducked out of the way, kicking his chest. He fell backwards on the floor, taking a moment before flicking his hair out of his face and jumping up on his feet, his remaining dagger at the ready.
“Men,” she laughed. “Always the same.”
He raised an eyebrow at her before shifting forms, a woman now in his place, her hair coming down to her waist in thick, dark waves. Her skin looked like glass, soft and milky-white, the slightest hint of a blush at her cheeks and nose, as if she just came in from the cold. Her eyes stayed the same, the familiar blue-green twinkling with mischief as she watched you take in her form.
“Hm, much better. What do you think?” She smirked, her lips painted a dark, crimson red.
“Um-“ Kai was at a loss for words, her mouth hanging open. This was the most strikingly beautiful woman she’d ever seen- her presence almost brought Kai to her knees. “What- what is this?”
Loki smiled, her brilliant teeth coming into view. She was breathtaking. “It’s me,” she twirled, “well, another form of me.” She winked at her.
“Darling Kai.” Loki stepped forward, slipping her long, delicate fingers around Kai’s jaw, still towering over her. “I don’t want to hurt you. We must be able to work something out, hm?”
She was trembling under Loki’s touch, everything about her completely overwhelming. Loki took the knife from her, disappearing it out of sight.
“Tell me, little one. What is it you desire? Credits? I’ll pay you handsomely for it,” her voice was dripping velvet, her eyes piercing Kai’s as she came closer so their lips ghosted each other’s. “Whatever you want,” she whispered before dipping her head to capture her lips, giving her the gentlest of kisses. Kai was lost in the feel of her, the faint taste of evergreen on her tongue as she licked it into Kai’s mouth, delicately moving it against her own. Loki pulled back, breaths mingling as they quietly panted.
“Wait- wait a second,” Kai pushed against Loki’s shoulders, coherent thoughts finally returning. “No. I can’t give it to you, I need it.”
Loki’s brow furrowed. “Whatever for? To sell it to this being? I can help you with that,” in a flash of green Birger was standing before you once more, the silver hair flat against his head. He outstretched his arms, “if you must sell it to a dealer, collector, what have you- sell it to Birger.” He grinned triumphantly at you.
“No, that’s not it. I need something in exchange for it.” She kept her eyes on Birger as she bent to pick up her katana, sheathing the blade by her side.
“What?” Loki sighed as she shifted back into herself, rolling her shoulders.
“It’s hard to explain,” she trailed off, not wanting to drudge this stuff up in front of her- lover? Target? Acquaintance?
“Try me, little one.” Loki leaned against the wall, her blue-green gaze soft.
“It’s- it’s my sister. Or she used to be my sister. She was taken one day, right in front of me. These people showed up, they came from these portals. They had these things with them, tiny machines that beeped and claimed she was some sort of abomination. So they took her,” her hands were in fists, her nails pressing into her palm.
“They did something- it erased every part of her life, including my memories of her. But the day after I started getting them back. I thought it was a dream at first, a little girl who looked just like me- my best friend.” She smiled pitifully as she paced back and forth, her arms wrapped around herself as she remembered.
“But the dreams kept coming, kept reminding me of things that felt so real- they had to be tangible memories. But I was the only one. My parents couldn’t remember their daughter. How sick is that?” She looked up at Loki and her eyes were wide with shock, and was that understanding? Where was the look of pity she’d grown so used to seeing when she opened up to others?
Kai swallowed dryly and continued. “I’ve been trying to find a way to get to her ever since. I know she’s still alive, I can feel it. She’s out there somewhere, alone.” She took a deep breath.
“I found out that the people who took her were called the Time Variance Authority. After years I managed to make a contact with an analyst there. He’s been feeding me information, ways I could possibly find her. I need the tesseract so I can trade it for one of their little machines. It opens the portals to their world. I was told if anyone had one, it’d be the collector.” She threw her hands up, motioning to the space around her.
After a few moments of silence Loki started chuckling which quickly turned into a fit of laughter. “I’m sorry-“ she gasped out, holding her stomach, her laugh almost maniacal. “You got me- oh you,” she shook her head, pointing upwards to some imaginary force.
Kai’s brow furrowed, looking around the room as if that’d help her piece it together. “What- who are you talking to?”
Loki’s laughter died down. She took a deep breath to settle herself. “I apologise- not the best reaction to have when someone tells you about their long lost sister. I was laughing because this may be the greatest cosmic joke I’ve heard in centuries. Since,” she pulled a compact rectangle out from behind her. “It seems I have exactly what you need.” She flicked the device open, revealing orange text against a black screen on one side, a series of confusing buttons on the other.
“Is that,” Kai reached forward but Loki moved it swiftly away. “A tempad.” She finished, a glint of mischief in her eyes. “Luckily I kept it in another- clearly safer, place than the tesseract.”
“How do you have this? I’ve searched for one for so long,” Kai’s voice wavered as she asked, her heart racing.
Loki licked her lips, “what they did to your sister- they tried to do the same to me. Although, they clearly underestimated who they were dealing with.” She gave her a wide grin.
“Now, let’s go get a drink,” she strode to the door, opening it with a wave of her hand before taking a look back at Kai. “And see if we can’t work ourselves out a little deal.”
