Shade had been a lot of places and known by a few different names. The supernatural was never something he was surprised by having grown up around them since he was a child and his family immigrated from Russia to the US. Russia one of the places not as tolerant to the supernatural, plus there was more money or at least that was the promise of it when he and his family left. They jumped around a few places and ended up in a rather interesting town where the supernatural were welcomed.
It didn’t take long to figure out what the big push was to come overseas when his mom ran off with a vampire. Needless to say Shade wasn’t the biggest fan of the creatures for a long time and became less so of everything and everyone when his father passed. Death was hard for Shade, even harder when his Dad had been his whole life. He was the reason Shade went to school, the reason he felt motivated to be something better than he was. Despite that, in his passing, Shade let himself fall apart. He used and abused people and fell into the Russian mob, then scratched and clawed his way to a top spot burying anyone he had to to get there.
Selfish, manipulative, conniving and cruel was how Shade was known. He was the guy that always knew a guy, the one that everyone knew killed someone, but no one could prove and he relished that. He liked the fear and power it gave him and wanted more. He always did, a creature of greed he was without fail.
Oddly enough it was in this place he ran into a vampire, of all things, and started an unlikely relationship. Gage had been good despite being a vampire and part of him felt he sort of understood why his mother did what she did. It didn’t mean he forgave her. He never would for her not showing up to bury his father. Love wasn’t something Shade wanted to feel, hell he didn’t even want a committed relationship, but somehow he ended up in both with Gage and it grew deeper by the day.
He’d shared too much with Gage and stupidly thought they’d have time to actually be together and see the relationship to its inevitable end. That was until Shade’s half-brother showed up and shit went to hell. Yvon, his brother, was a hunter and Gage not a fan of that, even less so considering Shade had hired and brought him into the town for a few reasons. Just because he was dating a vampire didn’t mean he trusted him or anything that was more powerful than himself. What he didn’t bank on was just how far Yvon would go to break up his relationship with Gage. He really should have saw the grandiose dickmove coming.
Most Russians didn’t like supernatural anything. They made death camps and kill squads, which Yvon had gladly led. They killed things for their differences without care. So finding out someone as high up as Shade was in the Bratva had such a creature at his side set off a snowball of shit onto the human that involved him having to do some regrettable things. Running wasn’t an option. Running meant Gage would be a target so he got rid of those that would have gotten rid of him. His once unlimited funds of cash became limited as he’d spent more and more to cover up the lives he took. Yvon kept pushing, kept threatening and it got harder and harder to keep the peace between them. Soon enough Shade was out of cash and Yvon had another squad of hunters, big mean fuckers. Inevitably they had to run.
Shade hated the fact he they had to leave, but understood survival was key. They ended up in an almost worst situation as the balance of power changed where they ended up and Shade became a slave to Gage, though Gage refused to treat him in such a way. Still the title bothered Shade, everything did and his began abusing drugs and being a general asshole most of the time. He and Gage fighting more while Gage kept pushing for Shade to change, to become a vampire so he wouldn’t have to be a slave. Finally the stubborn Russian caved to Gage’s suggestion and let Gage change him. Not even a day had passed and everything went to hell for the umpteenth time. Hunter’s found them and the two were separated. Shade had thought just separate and figured himself dead when Yvon of all people showed his ugly fucking mug again. He’d found them, it had been his pack of hunters and the only reason Shade was still alive was because Yvon willed it. His brother took him home to Russian and trained him to kill vampires and other supernatural creatures. He used him and his power to even the playing field, more of a slave to his brother than he ever was to Gage. It took him over a year to get away from Yvon, the man thinking of almost everything, but his crew. One of them fell for Shade’s charm and the vampire decimated Yvon’s crew, sure to leave his brother alive so he could and would always regret not killing Shade. It was probably a terrible move on his part, leaving his brother alive, but Yvon was still family and really it was thanks to his training that Shade was picked up by Lazarus and brought to Avalon where he decided to take up the fight, finding he liked killing from time to time. It gave him something to do with the eternity he had left.
