It was hardly fair.
That was the only thought coursing through his head as he slipped in a pool of blood, fell to the ground. It was hardly fair that his day would end like this. He hadn’t left the house that morning planning on getting ripped open. It hadn’t been one of those days, hadn’t been a day where he had to roam the streets in search of confrontation to fill the void inside.
He was careless. Careless. A simple errand shouldn’t have turned into this, but it wasn’t his fault he had run into a ghoul who was positively feral. In any case, what should or should not have happened wasn’t truly of importance -- He could feel his intestines slipping through his fingers.
Kanae braced himself against the cold bricks of the alley wall, a colorful variety of profanity slipping through tightly clenched lips as another wave of agony ripped through him. He was no stranger to injury ( his lifestyle required it ), but this was beyond what he had experienced, what he could take.
His breath came in short gasps as he tipped his head back against the wall, vision going blurry for a moment as he attempted a shift to grab his phone out of his pocket.
Who could he call?
Who would help him at this time of night? Who would help him at all?
( he didn’t deserve their assistance anyway )
When he managed to retrieve his phone, it almost slipped from drenched fingers into the mess on the ground.
( had it gotten bigger? surely there wasn’t that much blood before )
He had a pitiful number of contacts.
One jumped out at him as he squinted at his screen through the red threatening to cloud his vision. Haise. Haise seemed to have an inordinate interest in his well-being for reasons unknown. Still, hesitation stilled his hand as he considered calling one of the few people he could consider a friend.
( he was just an i n c o n v e n i e n c e
he should die -- save the world the trouble )
One tap to the screen later and he stared at the screen before shakily setting it to speaker. He couldn’t raise it to his ear. The click indicated an answer, and he began speaking instantly, not waiting for a ‘hello’.
❝ Schieße, I -- ❞
A labored breath, the effort of speaking almost too much for him.
❝ I think I’m dying.❞
