Normally the walk home from school was an easy one. It was quiet and peaceful. A time for him to clear his thoughts and focus on breathing in the fresh air and watching the scenery that surrounded him. During these times he’d have an earphone in his ear, the other hanging on the wire so he was still able to hear what was going on around him while humming the current song that played. So he went on with his normal routine of walking and listening to his playlist, closing his eyes momentarily before opening them once more.
He halted his movements after having heard something. He couldn’t decide if it was the harmless shuffle of leaves on the pavement or the troublesome sound of shoes scrapping against the sidewalk and struggling. Out of curiosity, Ogiwara removed his headphones and tuck his iPod safely into his backpack before turning around and slowly walking in the opposite direction he was previously going. Quietly, he moved, listening carefully for the sound again. To his surprise, he couldn’t hear it. So he relaxed a bit, turning again to head home. Though, a small, whimpering plea dragged Shigehiro’s attention back towards the other direction.
Slowly, he followed the desperate call for help. The closer he got to the scuffle, the more voices he heard. Some were laughing and others were saying things that would make his grandmother roll around in her grave if Ogiwara had so much as thought the words. He stopped, pressing his back against a brick wall once he had found the dark lane the group was hiding in. Peering around the corner, he observed for a moment, counting how many people were there and thinking of what would be a poorly thought out plan to get the girl to safety.
A sigh escapes his lips. Shigehiro couldn’t really think of anything that would get them both to safety so, stupidly, he walked toward the man in front of the girl and tapped him on the shoulder. He was met with an ugly face, contorted into what Ogiwara could only presume was an annoyed expression. There was a few words exchanged for the girl was forgotten by the group completely and without hesitation, she ran. Good, but there was no such luck for Shigehiro. The group had already circled around him like a pack of hungry wolves, leaving him no way of escaping.
Ogiwara couldn’t say what happened next because before he knew it, he was on the ground. He was curled up, his knees pulled up to his chest and his arms guarding his face and head so nothing vital was that severely damaged. Though, he was sure not even a minute had passed by since he hit the ground, it felt like a lifetime, the pain shooting through his nerves distorting the passing of time and dulling his nerves to anything else, but their fists and feet. He couldn’t feel the warmth or the stickiness of the blood running down his forehead, matting up his hair and staining his clothes. And soon he felt nothing at all, his vision blurring horribly. Still, he tried to stay awake, to feel their dull kicks and punches as a reassurance of the life still beating within him, but all he could feel was the light slipping farther and farther away and all he could see were his hands trying to grasp at it and hold on as tightly as a dying man could. ✯
