Moths

Summary: A look into Jemma's feelings when Fitz wakes up not remembering anything. No warnings. A rework of a piece I wrote for Fitzsimmons week.

You always look at people closely when you’re lying, confessing love, or something momentous is about to happen. Maybe on account of that, Simmons remembered so exactly how Fitz looked fifty days ago. The dark gray trousers (lightly pilling), thin-striped button up shirt (cuffs unbuttoned, should have been her first clue) with the dark ink stain at the left floating rib, the collar strangely starched and flipped. The artery in his neck twitched as his eyelids fluttered open. During her medical training, on account of drawing blood and placing IVs so often, her eyes became trained to travel to plump veins. She would search feet and hands and wrists and crooks of elbows, and when his carotid artery twitched so unexpectedly, it was difficult for her not to reach out and place the pad of her pointer and middle fingers there to feel the blood coursing through. Sometimes Jemma thought of blood as a ghost living within her, something that goes upon its business inside, like livers and love, without consulting her.

When he came to and locked eyes with all of them, consciousness returning to them (though was that something that could really be measured by looking into someone’s eyes? she wondered), she remembered that he looked incredulous. Skye squealed in delight and the rest of the team smiled, but Jemma knew better. It was obvious, but incalculable. As he asked those questions that made her stomach churn as if she was falling out of a plane (the second worst moment of her life, that was calculable), preplanned words exited her mouth hastily, stumblingly, and she heard them as if they were not her own. In fact, while one part of her talked to Fitz and the crushed team, another part of her thought about a certain shade of pale green (or was it turquoise?) that happened to be the exact shade of pale green that Fitz had told her once was the color of the universe, of course until Johns Hopkins published its correction. Now, as he explained, if you could stand outside of the universe and see it as it was, it would be beige, like Fitz’s skin now.

For fifty days since that moment, Jemma couldn’t sleep, at least not properly. A high-pitched pain had collected in the front of her skull – accelerating, advancing – like a thousand tiny moths beating against a window when the light was on indoors. Moths, that were trapped like they had been, beating helplessly against the glass.

Fitz didn’t know who he was anymore. Her exceptional memory (not photographic or even eidetic, Skye) felt like a cruel taunt. Why was she burdened with knowing that Fitz could sit down with half a watermelon and a spoon and eat the whole thing, that he read academic journals on his phone while he brushed his teeth, that he threw away perfectly good socks for no reason at all? As she ghosted through the lab, the beating of the tiny wings in her head intensified - Fitz would have never draped his pants over the chair in the lab or left those crumpled up notes. They worked together, out-of-sync, clumsily, like how man with one leg longer than the other. Simmons often felt as if she might pass through Fitz, although he always appeared to be solid. But, she supposed, everything is almost all-empty space anyway – a moth in a cathedral? She decided to move onto another metaphor.

That night she had been unable to sleep at all, as earlier Fitz had designed an improvement on the ICER but had missed her hand (though her hands were probably smaller than average hands, so were Fitz’s and he never missed), when she had absent-minded gone in for a high five. She remembered maniacally excusing herself, her speech pattern increased in rate and rhythm, but not volume as she spat vile words about Nick Fury and how he chose to preserve what was useful, not important. Coulson had come in, somber and silent, which only intensified her anger (he must have known that Fury would preserve only what he needed of Fitz's brain). If she had looked back at Fitz in the lab as she stormed out she might have noticed the blue in his eyes grow duskier, before he let out a distressed sob. Instead, she found a tin of butter cookies in the kitchen, with some crystallized sugar atop, crystallized in a way that made her feel, by comparison, hazy and unresolved.

She stayed there that night, staring at the ceiling of the kitchen. It was painted in drips and drabbles, shapes that would normally merge and morph into patterns for her, but they did not do so as she sat there, even though she waited for them to do so, even just playfully.

It was about 6am, she assumed, she didn’t look, when Fitz strolled into the kitchen. Their hellos were tawdry, but Simmons didn’t notice that because she was looking at the deep purple beneath his eyes, which made her think of the ocean, which made her feel like the moths were now wasps and that was not a pleasant thought to conjure at all. She really needed to move on from the metaphor.

As Fitz bustled in the kitchen, Simmons brought more cookies to her mouth, emptying the tin (she knew that Triplett wouldn’t mind). When Fitz turned around she became astutely aware of her fullness, as if the cookies were still in her esophagus, waiting patiently to become a part of her. That’s the best explanation she could come up with for her silence as she stared at the two mugs of tea he held in his hands.

He tilted his head for a moment, like a dog would. “Jemma, I’m sorry…”

She felt for a moment like she could sense her own skin desiccating, as if all water molecules had left her in order to boil in those two mugs of Earl Grey. It was definitely Earl Grey, although not as strong as the one they had had when they visited that Scottish fishing village, which had turned out to be entirely too strong for poor Fitz who drank it without sugar to appear more masculine. He didn’t need to, she thought absent-mindedly…

Her migraine returned full force as she realized she hadn’t said anything to him. The moths (oh, not that again), occluded the edges of her vision, but she could still see him drop exact three sugar cubes in one tea, and exactly one in the other, then lift the sugary fingers to tuck a curl behind his ear.

He sat down next to her, his profile hiding the elegant symmetry of his face, but showing off the tendons of his neck. She noticed the artery twitch again and she became very aware that her cheek was wet. Her tongue flicked out to remove the water pooled in the corner of her mouth, and she thought of the village again with its salty air.

Fitz had never liked silence, or tarragon, and she wasn’t surprised that he tried to fill it (which in turn belatedly surprised her). “I hope tea will make you feel a bit better. I…don’t know how you like it,” he said gently, nudging the tea with exactly one sugar towards her.

Words, although at first she was worried it was the cookies, rose up her throat and into her mouth, beating against the back of her teeth, like moths. She was beginning to get exasperated thinking of them all the time, when she remembered Fitz had confused them with butterflies when he had shook out his wool coat for the winter. Oh Fitz, she had rolled her eyes in feigned exasperation, and she didn't realize she had repeated the phrase once again, only softly this time. None of the other words seemed good enough, seemed ecstatic or clear enough to convey that now she knew that Jemma Simmons still existed somewhere in Fitz: unwiped, unchanged, in her pale green nightie boxers and pink tee shirt that he had mocked so thoroughly the first time they had stayed up all night. She was in there the whole damn time.

And she knew that someday he would love her again, like he had before. With the same certainty that she had realized she loved him when he first opened his eyes fifty days ago. The ghostly moths that beat against her temples vanished and she felt the flutter of butterflies in her gut instead. She noticed that her lips had begun gently brushing his neck, moving up to graze his jawline. Suddenly the texture of his skin was different and wet, and she realized that those were his lips, and everything becomes deliriously….calm.

Coulson is big on building a strong sense of camaraderie in his team, so every week the team sits down together and watches a movie. every week.

they rotate who picks the movie so everyone gets to complain on not their night have a chance to pick a movie every couple of months

Coulson always picks an old war movie. He also always cries at the end.

May prefers assassin type movies.especially if it's women getting shit done instead. skye's always excited when it's may's turn.

Ward is always fond of the classic westerns. everyone assumes so, though he watches it straightfaced just like any other movie. unless there's a dog with the hero, then he tears up a bit for some reason

Skye always picks a slasher flick, the bloodier the better. she's placed a ban on Jemma talking about the inaccuracies of the bloodloss depicted

 Fitzsimmons switch amongst themselves but one will always pick a cheesy sci fi movie while the other picks a classic from british comedy films. either way, there's a general confusion for the rest at the moments they choose to giggle at

Triplett tends to surprise the team with his picks. sometimes it's a comedy (like monty python or national lampoon) but sometimes he just throws cinderella in the dvd player and no one really sees it coming. he really just likes to see his team smile
