Me, completely enamored by both Selena and Luna: Aside from the fact that Selena and Luna both take great pride in themselves and their abilities, they also share the trait that they don’t trust new people they meet that fast.
Selena lived on an island all her life and despite her mother thinking she’s not ready to go out into the world, she seems to have inherited the same suspicious nature, as she even says herself that she didn’t like how people always came up and talked to her when she first arrived. Even if she understands that they’re just being nice, she still distrusts them. Of course she comes across as arrogant and rude because she doesn’t know how to respond to people at first and the only thing she can really believe in is her own self and abilities. She sounds like she’s just bragging when she first talks to Luna, but all she’s had in her life were her parents and her dancing.
Luna has grown up supporting her big sister who’s insecurities stemmed from being bullied as a child. She has good reason to distrust people who come off sounding arrogant. She's naturally suspicious of people anyway, not immediately trusting people from a first meeting, as can be told by the fact that her sweet demeanor is usually based around running the tailor shop. It’s customer service. Luna’s extreme distrust and dislike of Selena upon meeting her is not surprising due to her natural suspicion, especially of arrogant people who put others down. She may have gone too far and been too rude, ending up actually hurting Selena’s feelings, but
They both have reasons for acting the way they do and I blame neither of them. Also Kathy, having a father who is kind and sweet, but has a scary appearance that frightens children, is often good at seeing beyond the outer shell of people. I think this is why she became friends with Selena easily (aside from them getting the chance to work together) and is able to see the similarities between Luna and Selena.
