This is my Artist's Statement for my school's AP Art show this week. We all needed to write one to display with our artwork and yeah, thought I'd share mine ok.
"Art was never something that was shoved down my throat as a child, it wasn’t something hugely explored in my family. That used to bother me a little, but it passed quickly because then Art became something I could use as an outlet, a sort of reprieve from reality, and if it had been something I’d always been around I probably would not associate it with feelings of freedom and escape, which is one of the best parts. Art knows no bounds, it can take you anywhere you want, anywhere you create. Art is my catharsis, a way to express and release emotion, to tell a story or capture a moment.
For my Concentration, I chose to depict twelve different ways that people connect and the role that Time plays in all of them. The base of each piece is an old clock, and on top of that is the depiction of the connection between two people. Each one is different and they all tell their own story whether it’s holding hands, a reassuring text message, music, etc. and how time plays its role in them.
The thing I like most about my Concentration pieces is that they are open to interpretation. The meaning I’ve intended for them will be there and stated but it isn’t the only one and I encourage those looking at it to search for their own meaning in my pieces. That’s what I love so much about art, how expressive it is and how you can never be wrong in what you see when looking at and interpreting a piece. You will never be wrong when you express yourself, and there is freedom in that. If nothing else, that is what I will take away from my experience with Art."
