SS American Star (Former SS America, USS West Point (AP-23), and Alferdoss)
Built in 1940, the SS America was the flagship of the United States Line. It served as a troop transport during World War II as USS West Point (AP-23). In 1964, the ship was sold and cruised under the name Alferdoss ("Paradise" in Arabic). The ship was sold for scrap in the late 1980's, but instead was sold again in 1993, renamed the SS American Star, and was intended to become a floating casino in Pkuket, Thailand. Shortly thereafter, the ship ran aground while under tow near Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.
The ship has been slowly breaking up on the rocks over the past two decades, with the remains being visible now only during low tide.
