Barnaby Edwards - E.M. Forster

Today’s LGBTQ+ hero is the author E.M. Forster (1879-70), one of my favourite writers. He skewered the hypocrisy, racism and stupidity of the British Empire in the early 20th-century. He also wrote one the best gay love stories of all time: Maurice. It was so autobiographical, it wasn’t published until after his death.

Essay Ideas

I feel like this essay will be challenging because of how long the book is and how confusing it was to read. It's only slightly overwhelming. I think Mrs. Moore could be a good character to write about because she has a big character development. There are probably a lot of quotes that could support this too. Another topic that I thinnk might be good is the Marabar Caves and the symbolism behind it. It may be a little difficult to describe the caves and what happened there through quotes, but I feel like it would be an interesting topic.

Mrs. Moore Character Development

Mrs. Moore changes from the beginning of the novel to the end. At first, she was very optimistic and enthusiasic about life and exploring India. She was kind to everyone, even the Indian people. Towards the end of the novel however, after the experience in the caves, her viewpoint changed. She became worrisome about life and felt like nothing mattered. Her demeanor changed completely.

Movie vs. Book

The movie was a lot easier to follow than the book. Even though it was two hours and 44 minutes long, it was so much easier to follow because of the visuals. Seeing relationships unfold during movies is more tangible than reading about them. It was a hard book to follow, so having the movie alongside the book was really helpful. The movie made many events of the book simpiler to comprehend. Being able to watch the book acted out really helped with the clarity of a lot of the scenes, especially a the Marabar Caves. The movie also cut out a lot of the fluff in the book that was unimportant.

Point of View

"A Passage to India" is writted in the third person omniscient, which is very important as to how the story plays out to the reader. The reader knows what each character is thinking about and this allows for an insight into what's going on in each of their lives. This is helpful for understanding what each character is processing, and allows the reader to form their own opinions on each character. This also helps avoid bias, and makes the ethos of the book more trustable. If this book was written in the point of view of one of the characters, it would be very one sided and bias because all of the characters are so different and are going through their own things in their own lives. They also all have different opinions about each other. The third person omniscient allows for an unbiased and full picture understanding of the story, which is really helpful for readers.
