Perched atop a large hill that overlooked the woods, Caesar took in the early morning air. The sun was on its way into the sky, casting beautiful colored light over the landscape. Even now, Caesar was amazed by the life that the forest took on in the dawn of a new day. But the reality of their situation was never far behind.
The chimpanzee's brows furrowed deep creases into his forehead as his eyes landed upon the patch of forest that had been burned to cinders by humans, in their most recent attempt to destroy the apes. Every morning, the ape leader placed himself here, facing the direction of the human city, expecting to see more flames engulfing the remains of his home. Perhaps expecting the sound of helicopter propellers instead, or gunfire. But everything seemed eerily quiet now... The fires had been weeks ago now, and no other assault had come for them. But why?
Caesar was shaken from his thoughts by the sound of an approaching ape, and looked over his shoulder to find brilliant red hair and a wide gray face staring back at him. A smile touched his lips at the sight of his closest friend, and he didn't need prompting to sign a greeting to the old orangutan.
'Good morning, Maurice.'
Chimpanzee hands moved with experience that very few of the apes shared, but this ape was one of them. For that, Caesar was eternally grateful... Even if Maurice's past had not been kind to him, at least they had been able to communicate at the shelter.
'Still no sign of them. Wonder why they stopped coming for us?'
