objectively speaking france/romano and america/romano are the best ships bc they can be called "romance" and "americano" respectively and that's beautiful
I will kiss your body all over — And you shall kiss me back again many times as you kissed me when we were in Paris. And nothing will matter but just we two, we two longing loves at last come together.
wth??? Like people call APH France x APH Romano Framano. Like you've got a perfectly good opportunity to call it Romance I am legit crying it's the most beautiful pairing name. Just do it, Romance, and you call it Framano what kind of world are we living in, you guys need to stop??? Romance pls.
So I was reading this awesome RusAme fic the the chosen end Link Here I was reading the comments and was prompted to write this in response to one the authors rant, which while I like her stuff seemed a little unfair. It seemed to me that maybe some people may not understand what polyamory in aph and in general can be about. Here's what I am responding to mainly.
" Although it IS kind of strange that America sounds like he's exclusively dating Russia; what does that make all of his other diplomatic contacts with other nations then? (it's kind of an unwritten rule that all the nations are sluts xD)
/activate rant
I HATE THIS UNSPOKEN RULE. It's so stupid! Why wouldn't the nations understand fidelity, loyalty, and jealousy just the same as humans? We write them as feeling things like normal people in every other respect! I think the nations are far less slutty than fandom would have them be. In my personal canon, America has only EVER slept with four countries--and none of them concurrently. Sure there are some slutty nations--France is canonically slutty, Austria is certainly implied to be a bit, er, open to suggestion--but I like to think that sleeping with another nation is kind of a big deal. (America and Russia didn't do it for a hundred and forty years, after all.)
Saying that two nations would be dating/sleeping together just because they have diplomatic contact is such a weird idea, when you think about it, and not reflected in canon at all. Why shouldn't they be acquaintances? Friends? Coworkers? You know...95% of the range of relationships that people have?
Arghh. It's just so annoying to me. The whole "all nations are polyamorous!" thing. Bite me, fandom. I know it's not as much ~fun~ unless all the characters are giant sluts, but that seems like seriously bizarre and lazy characterization to me. Like, Hetalia's a multishippers paradise, and I will ship anybody with anybody, but...not within a single continuity, you know?
Total pet peeve of mine.
So yeah. The reason it sounds like he's only dating Russia is because he IS only dating Russia."
I really don't think it's fair to throw all polyamory under the bus just as a matter of course. Polyamory can also mean a relationship between more than two countries. Like for instance America x Germany x Italy. It's possible that a committed relationship could exist between more than two countries. Especially since these are personifications who live lives much longer and different than regular humans. They are personifications of a land and it's people in human form; literally both one and many at the same time. So it's not a great leap to think that more complex relationship groupings may result. This can happen with humans too but with nations who experience life on such a greater level, depending on the degree that you want to think that they are in tune with they're land and people. Those groupings and romances could also be exclusive. Particularly with some pairing relationships adding another character can actually solve a lot of problems and make the relationship between the two characters more stable. This is because a third character may be able to fill needs that both characters have. Humans already have a great diversity in types of relationships due to the great flexibility/effect and influence that culture can have over these areas.
As for insulting the whole trope that the nations are much more promiscuous because it personally makes you uncomfortable I can understand that. A lot of times I feel that way about pairings like usuk and others where one party seems to have raised the other for a time. However I also understand that how pairings like that deal with it is to assume that the nations are not exactly like humans in terms of sexuality and relationships. It all depends on how you want to take the metaphor of relationships between nations, how human you want them to be, how you want to take the effect that having the extremely long lives nations may have would have on them. The fandom can have multiple takes on how things operate in this area that should be allowed to exist and be a thing/respected.
I think it is important to truly understand a trope, where it comes from and it's nature before one passes judgement or hates on it's existence. For example on kink meme I posted a prompt about Canada being able to be badass in his own way in certain situations was completely insulted by anon who said that it was a stupid trope that the whole fandom laughs at. Which really ticked me off, and I sincerely hope that said anon did not know just what they were insulting because generally most decent people would not just go and insult thousands of Canadian WW1/WW2 veterans/ a countries valor. On can personally prefer to have them more as human in this respect without throwing all other interpretations under the bus automatically. Not only that but if one really wants to have a rich experience of the fandom and all it has to offer then one can appreciate multiple takes on the characters, allowing each to be it's own thing.
I think that the take on the nations being more promiscuous can be an interesting one, especially if it is done with thought and really dug into. It is possible to think that maybe sex along with other physical things are not as big of a deal to nations who experience things such as immigration, emmigration, occupation, invasion, trade, alliances, investment, colonization, the building of embassies, the building of bases, and aid from other countries. It is possible that some of these things can seen in personifications as a relationship possibly a sexual one or not. Either that the personifications participating in such behaviors facilitates such things occurring between nations in other words behavior between nations having an effect on what happens between that nations people and land. Also it is possible that it could work the other way that being, that nations are driven to behave in sexual ways with each other when these things occur. Or both directions of influence could be occurring at the same time and they could feed into each other.
It may be that when it comes to sex nation-tans may be more like our evolutionary close relatives Bonobos where stress is relieved through sexual behaviors instead of aggression. In this take it would be when nations are not having sexual relations with each other that one should be worried because that would mean that war is more likely.
Also sex may not be the to which nations can be the limit to the level/way to which they can be intimate with each other. In a good but only really expansive AmeIta fic I read it was suggested that maybe nations could sense each other like they sense themselves. Or mingle they're auras in more of a psychic kind of connection. Plus it's hard to say whether nations would get jealous the same way regular people do or that they handle/deal with it the same way either.
Also kind of harsh throwing poor France under the bus like that, France could just be a flirt particularly since France has not always been so ready to surrender his vital regions to others. I don't even really think it's fair to characterize nations-tans as sluts really because it is what they're nation needs that drives them for most and if such behavior is the norm among they're kind. For a nation-tan having strong relations with many other nation-tans is essential so it seems silly to me to slut shame them. Adaptation wise that is the other use for sex as a behavior is for making strong bonds between members in a social group (Bonobos).
As for America, one way one could see him is like the Tramp is because of the many ways of countries having an impact on him and how much impact he has had on other countries particularly since after world war 2. http://irascendedlolkitten.tumblr.com/post/98263205790/lady-and-the-tramp-hes-a-tramp-this-song
Not saying that even in this take that all relations even have to be sexual but maybe with nation-tans sex isn't such a big deal for nation-tans. It's not the only way to see romance between aph countries but it is an interesting one that can work well.
