Hey, I have a question. I saw someone headcanon their hws Norway as part Sámi and use some Sámi elements in their fanarts to their Norway, what do you feel about that? Is it uncomfortable or weird if someone made their hws Norway half/part Sámi due to Norway’s history with Sápmi, or is it just “who cares lmao”?

Good question!

I think you would get a different answer from different Sámi, it's quite a hot topic nowadays of what is okay/not okay for "outsiders" to do with our culture. I think I'm more on the open side because I believe culture should be shared, that is the best policy. I have personally been to Japan and been invited to try their traditional clothes/practices, it was so amazing and educational! Though, I think there is a tasteful way of doing it. I would not be opposed to letting my friends try on my traditional clothing ect. (Actually, when you marry a Sámi you're technically Sámi too in our culture, so you adopt the dress from the area of your spouse. Sorry bf, when you marry me you are no longer Portuguese!)

Now, for me and with the story I have built around my OC Sápmi, I think it definitively makes sense for Norway (as well as Finland, Sweden and Russia) to be part Sámi, as he has been part of their upbringing. I do agree with @ifindus's head canon that Norway doesn't speak the language, since it is a dying language.

I guess, you could even argue that since he is not an official country (just a land area named Sápmi/Lapland) he could be "dead" in canon, like the other ancients (e.i. Scandinavia, Rome, Germania). I argue that because the Sámi culture is still strong and living, that he could still be alive, kinda like how Prussia is still alive.

I do think Norway and Sapmi would be separate countries much in the same way Norway and Sweden are. During the Viking Age, they definitely co-existed in some of the same areas, but what is the very north of Norway today was not included in the country of Norway during this period of time - mostly only inhabited by Sami people. Norway was considered its own country from 871, so at the beginning of the Viking age. The Sami people were also a nomadic people, so borders are a bit difficult to pin down regardless.

In Hetalia we see borders change all the time, i.e. Baltics living with Russia during the Soviet Union, and I do think Sapmi today very much reach all the requirements to be considered its own entity in Hetalia. I prefer Sapmi as their own nation and character in Hetalia, because I think that would be very beneficial to showing off the culture better. Though Sami people (in Norway) are of course no less Norwegian because of it.

In regards to the missing ask about Norway speaking any of the Sami languages, I think most likely he would not? He probably knows a few phrases or sentences in Nordsamisk, but not enough to hold a conversation or understand much.

Suggest having a look at @saltlakris 's design for Sapmi ✨ they also most likely have a better understanding of this than me 😅

@saltlakris you know I had to do some history for your challenge! 

This piece is inspired by a famous illustration made in 1767 of a Sámi shaman /noaidi with a runebomme (drum) from my hometown/municipality. The use of these drums in relation to Sámi religion is documented in written sources as far back as the 1100s, probably going back even further. These drums are rare to find in Norwegian museum because of how christian missionaries went in to destroy them in their work to convert Sámi people. The drums were used find answer to questions and help in desion-making by how a metal ring or a bone figurine moved across the symbols when you hit the drum with a bone hammer.

I’m super exited to announce my first ever drawing competition!! Let’s get into the specifics...

To enter the competition all you have to do is draw my OC Sápmi and tag me so I can easily find it! All entries will be reblogged and I’ll choose a winner based on creativity, bonus points if you do a little research and add cultural elements. I spent a long time going back and forth between which character to choose seeing as I am mainly a Norway blog... but that felt a little too impersonal since he’s not really my character; so I entrust you all with a character that means a lot to me in, both because I, as many do, love my OC but also since I want to share my culture with more people. Please take good care of him!

Shaped by the Arctic tundra, Sápmi might come of as cold and unwelcoming at first. He can be crude at times, always speaking his mind without any filter. However, after getting to know him more closely, he has a sweet side and a great love for his family and friends. He will offer you food or coffee, but he doesn’t actually care if you decline, he’s going to give you something either way. In that way, he’s a lot like a stubborn grandmother. Actually, he’s like that in many ways.

Aph Sapmi tries on modern clothing and is not exactly impressed... I’ve been trying to work on his character a bit more lately and I’m starting to become more and more pleased with him!
