Ben does love to play his cruel heterosexual games — completely unprompted, too.   ( Although, perhaps one could make the argument that the hungry, drunken way Zero had been looking at him counted as prompting. )   It feels awfully mean-spirited, the way he likes to bring it up, taunting him with his unattainability. It’s all very bully-jock-circa-1995; sometimes he thinks he can hear the homophobic slur dancing around in Ben’s throat, stopping just shy of jumping onto his tongue.

But, going by that same logic, it would not be unreasonable to assume that the teasing reminders are a sort of prompting of their own: I’m curious, I want you to try; he just can’t make the first move, because that would send a message he’s too much of a pussy to send. Very bully-jock-circa-1995 indeed.

SARA  IS  GOING  TO  BE  PROM  QUEEN.    it's the only thought that's been in her head all night. all week. all month. all she's been able to think about is the crown. or, more importantly, the people in her way. her fathers voice echoes in her head, cheering her on, pushing her forward. it's late, dark, prom already part way through. if she was going to win queen she needed to hurry. she'd already taken out six of her competitors, the ones she'd been sure were the hard part. julie was supposed to be easy, take five minutes tops. a one legged girl was not a threat. at least, that's what she'd thought.

but julie was strong, unnaturally so, and had managed to wrestle her way on top of sara. this was a bad look for sure. julie would topple her entire plan, would get her caught or killed or worse: keep her here long enough to take the crown before letting her go, forcing her into the humiliation of losing. but just when things are looking at their worst, just when sara thinks all could be lost, julie is suddenly pulled off of her. immediately sara's backing up, and before she knows what shes seeing a man has finished the job for her. goodbye number seven, hello prom queen.

still sat on the ground, wide eyes scan julie's body, scan up her own dress. she's covered in blood, no one would vote for a girl covered in blood. but oh! who else could they vote for? seven girls down, none to go. prom queen was a sure thing. but there's the pesky reality of dead bodies, of searching for a killer. they'd take her away. they'd take her crown. this man was suddenly sara's only chance at keeping what was rightfully hers.      “she— she killed them all.”     innocence becomes her, voice shakes as she speaks the words. fear that he wont comply masquerades as fear of what she'll claim julie has done, corpse trail pushed onto a dead girl. and who would dare go against the queen?

A quick glance in Ben’s direction confirms that he does not, in fact, find this comment funny. Zero unconvincingly bites back a smile and lets out a small sigh, blankly looking upward at nothing in particular. His own opinion on God changes day by day, mood by mood, but he’s never been able to shake the fear or the love.

He is just as elated at Ben’s resentment as he is at the gesture itself. Against all odds, against all better judgment, the bastard cares. He’s never going to let him live this down.
