You do not only make fashion when you’re a stylist you create it. Fashion is all around us everywhere you go; it’s an essential part of life. I choose fashion to be my high art because it takes talent, persistence, and the skill to create new ideas. Fashion is a major part of our world and to ignore it would be ignorant.

There are millions of people all over the world with a different background, language, or religion; style and fashion is what brings people together. Fashion is the only creation that has a whole week dedicated to it, Fashion Week in New York.

In addition to all of the outside appearance to fashion, an intense amount of work goes into the preparation and construction of clothes and accessories. It’s not enough to know how to make an appealing outfit or an astonishing purse; the stylist also has to be aware of what has already been done and what is in style. Above all the stylist needs to establish a reputation for him or herself. It’s an incredibly difficult task to create a line that people are interested in, and to get your name across to the world. These are the reasons why many people cannot make a living out of fashion because a field of innovation, there is no room for repeats.

Imagine designing a style, or a form of dance, or a type of hair cut that everybody including the world’s most powerful people wants to have or learn how to do. That is what being a top fashion designer is like; they rule the world in a sense because the world sees their creations. Designers at the top of their profession may earn well over $85,000-$100,000 a year. Fashion is important for many different occasions; from a job interview, to the Olympic Games, to what the political parties wear for the election campaigns. Each individual has a culture, personality, and style that fashion helps bring to life.

Fashion is used to enhance beauty and develop a unique and new personal style. Tom Ford, fashion stylist, once said, “People always ask me how I start a collection, and I tell them that I just look around. What am I tired of? What am I in the mood for? Real fashion change comes from real changes in real life. Everything else is just decoration.”  Fashion is an essential part of life, not only is it a billion dollar industry but it helps create a first impression. High art is who a person is, what they do, and how they create/ preform something that people enjoy.  Fashion is a form of high art because it captures identity, creates culture, and makes an image that people want to follow.

Wedding cakes are an example of high art because the cakes embody the qualifying features of high art including tastefulness, emotional characteristics, and the required attention to details. Not only to wedding cakes meet the standards of high art but they are also similar to other forms of high art, such as painting and sculpting. Wedding cakes involve a great deal of hard work, effort, and emotion. With all of these qualities it is easy to see that wedding cakes are indeed a form of high art.

For All Of The Non-Believers….

Some people may not consider wedding cakes to be a form of high art because of the characteristics that go into making the cake. They could say that there is no emotional aspect of wedding cakes because all the baker has to do is simply follow a recipe. They could argue that without emotions put into the ingredients cakes are simply something that looks pretty. However, cakes have a large emotional aspect. The cake is designed for supposedly the happiest day of the couple’s lives. The cake should embody happiness, joy and also go along with the theme of the wedding. The emotion is a combination of what the couple wants and the emotion the baker puts in when creating the cake. Another argument against wedding cakes being a high art is that though following the instructions anyone can bake a cake. That statement may be true but the quality and outward appearance of the cake will depend on the skill level of the baker. It takes a specialized skill set to create a high-end wedding cake.

How Are Wedding Cakes Similar To Other Forms Of High Art?

The features of wedding cakes can be compared to forms of high art such as sculpting and painting. Bakers make three-dimensional decorations on the outside of cakes. Similar to sculpting, the baker makes decorations out of sugar and other edible items. Bakers can create an ecstatically pleasing decorative item such as a flower. After the decorations are dried the artist must then use an edible paint to coat the sculpted décor with the desired colors and designs. Sometimes bakers also paint or frost designs directly on the cake itself. These creations are similar to sculpting and painting, although on a much smaller scale. Instead of painting on a canvas or carving out of stone, bakers of wedding cakes create decorative, edible pieces to enhance the appearance of the overall cake.
