Picking the Work: 2

To be honest when i decided that this book would be my choice, it was based of the movie trailer which fascinated me and I assumed the book had to be interesting as well. Also it was on the New York Best Sellers so it had to be alright aha. When I talked to Kreinbring about it he said the author was fairly new, but as long as it had enough criticism you should be good and thank god Oakland University Library had a decent amount of critiques on it. Otherwise I would have had to look for another book and I don't think I would of found one that interested me as much.

Picking the Work: 1

When beginning to pick our books I had no idea where to start mostly because I didn't no what would interest me and be considered of literary merit. One day during class we were in the computer lab and I was on you tube watching new trailers for upcoming movies, and I happened to stumble upon a movie called The Reluctant Fundamentalist. The movie's trailer intrigued me and I decided to do some research on it and I found out it's based upon the book The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. The author is pretty well known and has had some best sellers and this book was among them.

Breakfast of Champions

So I've decided to read Breakfast of Champions, because the book just seems unique to anything else that I've looked into. The idea of following the lives of two different people, and intertwining them as the novel progresses is really interesting. The reviews said it was good, and from what I can tell, the book will be a quick read. There used to be a show on T.V. that I used to watch that had a similar concept, and it was great, so I hope this book turns out the same way.

On an unrelated note, when I went to Barnes and Nobles to pick up the book, this random guy came up to me and showed me a picture of this family from Detroit in the early nineteen hundreds and said, "Hey man, tell me whats wrong with this picture." I really didn't know how to respond so I just said, "I don't know." He then says, "You see this kid right here", as he points to a baby in the front, "He's got a big ass head." I laughed in agreement, because in all honesty, the baby did have a big head, then he just left without buying anything. Weird Stuff.

Picking my Book

I'm split between two books, Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I've heard Kreinbring talk about Never Let Me Go in class, which is why i'm considering it, but its downside is that it's  relatively recent. Google Scholar has some sources on it, but not nearly as many as Breakfast of Champions. Both seem to have their ups and downs, which is what made this decision hard. I'm honestly leaning toward Breakfast of Champions though, because Vonnegut is a very well respected writer, and the book just seems more interesting overall.

Picking the Work. Numero 2.

I marched right into Kreinbring's class because I was confident that I had my book picked out. Of course, neither of these books had enough criticism to write this project so Kreinbring suggested yet another book by the same author of The Virgin Suicides and The Marriage Plot. It was called Middlesex and from there a project was born.

Picking the Work

Well, one day I was off to the bookstore to go find a book for this fabulous project. The book I had in mind was The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. I had heard that it was a good book so I was determined on reading that one. Sadly, when I arrived at Barnes and Noble there was no copy of that book left. Of course, I was not pleased with this and did not want to wait for the book to be shipped to my house; so, I picked up two other books, one by the same author, The Marriage Plot, and another one that i had heard was good, The Memory Keeper's Daughter. I decided to go see Mr. Kreinbring the next day to get one of those books approved.

Picking the Work 2

After reading a few chapters of The Count of Monte Cristo online, I decided to go to the library to pick up a paper copy. Looking through the shelves in the library and realizing how long the book was, I changed my mind. The book is 1200 pages! And I’ve read five chapters already without becoming significantly interested. So browsing through the “Classics” rack at the Troy Public Library, I stumble upon the novel Love in the Time of Cholera. Tales of romance are always interesting, so I’ve picked it up and decided to read it. It has much more critical analysis, it’s been made into a movie here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0484740/), and it is interesting to see how modern romance compares to romance of the past. I’ve decided to wait until I’m halfway through the book to post this, just so there aren’t any more changes.

Picking the Work (2)

Yeah....Frankenstein it is. All I really had to do was read the introduction for both of them and I quickly realized which one was going to be the better read for me. Frankenstein had a really interesting intro that actually enticed me to read it, and usually (in my opinion) intros to older novels such as Frankenstein are usually boring and full of dull facts that I really do not care about at all...which is exactly what Dracula's intro was like. I got about a half a page into reading it when I got the sudden urge to just chuck it at the wall (good thing I didn't, considering it's a library book and I don't have the extra cash to pay for replacing it). So yup, my book = Frankenstein...this will be fun (at least I have an excuse to watch movies).
