Anti-War Movie

Saving Private Ryan is one of the best examples of an anti-war movie. It shows in vivid detail how truly horrifying war is and how bad it really can get. Spielberg shows how people die in war and how little that death can mean to someone. It shows the true evil of war and displays in front of audience the cruelty of war.

The Patriot

One reason that The Patriot is an Anti-war movie is that it shows the horrible brutality that occurs against innocent people that get caught up in the war. In the movie Mel Brooks' family gets caught up in the war by helping wounded soldiers from both sides of the war when a battle occurs right outside their house. One of his sons is killed by a british officer and his house is burnt down. Another reason that The Patriot is an anti-war movie is that it uses Mel Brooks and the British officer as examples of how bad war can truly be. Mel Brooks' character shares stories from a past war that he fought in that shows unbelievable things that soldiers do during a war and the British officer works as a living example of those horrible things.

Anti-War War Movie

Probably one of the more popular war movies that is actually anti-war would have to be Saving Private Ryan. This movie shows the horrors of war, and Steven Spielberg perfectly chooses shots that help prove his point that war really is Hell. The opening scene shows the graves of all the soldiers who lost their lives in the storming of the beaches of Normandy, the countless headstones help prove Spielberg's point. As the movie continues it shows the invasion of Normandy, and nothing is left out. All of the death and struggle is shown and helps portray how evil and sad war is. Also, the movie helps spotlight the life and fears that the soldiers in the movie have, which helps translate to the reader how bad war is and even the most battle hardened soldiers can't take it.

War Movie

Saving Private Ryan is a war movie that is an anti-war war movie. This is anti-war movie because it shows all the hardships of war. Instead of making war glorified like one would assume a war movie to be, it shows all the heart wrenching moments that people would never want to go through, and the dark side of the war. One example of this is explaining to families that their sons, brothers, husbands, are gone forever. Almost everyone can relate to losing a loved one, so this hits people's feelings very hard. The hardships of the war itself are also found when the soldiers perspectives are shown as they are grudging through battles. To see all the pain and agony they go through fighting, making a viewers heart go out and hope for the madness to end. By showing all these negative sides of war, Saving Private Ryan is an anti war war movie.

Gone With the Wind

Released in 1939, the movie Gone with the Wind was an anti-war epic. The story shows how the Civil War led to the destruction not just to the southern economy, but the emotional core of the people within the region. Most of the characters in the movie are initially very excited about kicking some Yankee butt except for Ashely Wilkes. A predominate plantation owner and one of the leaders of the Savannah community is very much against the war, he says "Most of the miseries of the world were caused  by wars. And when the wars were over, no one ever knew what they were about."  He essentially saying that war causes pointless pain and suffering that are merely caused by peoples pride. Throughout the movie we also see the pain that war causes to the families in the south, the economy forever ruined. Many of the characters eventually just want the war over with. What is the point of going to war if it is caused by the pride of the few? Wars become so gruesome that the initial problem for going to war causes more death and destruction than the issue is actually worth.

Anti-War War Movie

I think The Hurt Locker was a good example of an anti-war war movie. Even though it glorifies the action of the war, the whole movie shows the horror and paranoia associated with being a soldier, and how painful it is to lose a loved one. While these are themes in most anti-war movies, The Hurt Locker adds an interesting reason against war. The movie starts off with the quote "War is a drug." At the end of the movie, the main character decides to go back to Iraq a third time because he cannot feel satisfied in the civilian world anymore. The movie shows that after a while, people can become addicted to the environment of war and their previous lives will feel unnatural to them. It is best not to enter war because all it does is cause pain and suffering.
