A Review of the 2016 APMAs!
The APMAs. The Journeys Alternative Press Music Award show fueled by Monster Energy live on somewhere. The Hot Topic Grammys. The worst award show of the summer. The longest awards show of the summer. Whatever you call them here’s my thoughts on them.
I have only watched these awards since last year. Last year they kicked ass in my opinion. The line up of performances and appearances sold me on this whole concept. I was also new to the whole alternative rock scene, so seeing it all for the first time live on my television was really cool. I have bee around all this for a year now so its different this time. Honestly I am a bit indifferent to the whole thing this year.
The red carpet preshow started at 2 o’clock in the afternoon my time. I had interrupted Alternative Press’s post here on Tumblr earlier in the week to mean that it would be live streamed here on Tumblr. 20 minutes after 2 o’clock Alternative Press posted a link to go watch it on YouTube. That irked me a bit not gonna lie.
The Red carpet preshow went on for 3 hours. Spoiler alert the actual show was 4 hours. The preshow was practically the same length as the actually show. the last year the preshow was 30 minutes and the actually show 3 hours. If the preshow is going to be three hours maybe doing a live performance. No, it was 3 hours of interviews. This was hosted by Ash Costello of New Years Day and Keith of Every Time I Die. I like Ash and she was fun and seemed to be having fun. I liked her last year too. I don’t know much about Keith, I am a fan of New Years Day, but he seemed to just want to get the whole thing done and over with. Last year it felt like he was some sort of fun but he just seemed done this year.
Now It can’t bee the APMAs without technical difficulties. The red carpet preshow froze and lost audio at points. On top of this my internet often quits working for short periods during the time of day the preshow was on. Not their fault by still annoying. The whole preshow got done like 30 minutes early. Which kind of bugged me a bit because there was 30 minutes until the actual show started, on another website.
The actual show, despite it being fours hours, I don’t have much to say. It was the APMAs in its slightly drunk inappropriate state. I liked last year when All Time Low came out and performed the medley of classics. This year just didn’t offer that bang. This year we were voting for president of the APMAs between Jack Barakat or Alex Gaskarth, both of All Time Low. So they both came out and were asked questions about political matters that they then made jokes about asked by some guy from teen wolf and than the both gave speeches. Jack kissed Alex’s “grandma” and it was weird.
Patrick Stump won best vocalist and was sad he didn’t win best drummer. Josh Dun was mad he wasn’t up for or win best drummer. And Jack Barakat apparently sends Brendan Urie nude selfies. Last year it felt like everyone performing got two songs, there was maybe two special appearances for performances and if you were Weezer you got three songs. The last two performances of the night both got two songs. Everyone else got like four or five and there was as either a cover or special appearances or both for everyone. This year it felt like we saw the host a lot less than we did last year. Which bugged me because that’s why I watching. Jack Barakat is now president so that’s cool. I wanted him to win honestly thought it would be Alex. but he won, although it was close the entire night.
Overall, I am indifferent to the whole show this year. It wasn’t bad but I don’t feel like it was as good as it was last year. I like knowing people I voted for won but I tune for performances and the hosts, that’s where it lacked for me this year. I think the president thing was a clever concept, I just wished they would have done more with it. The whole thing last 7 hours and it wasn’t really that great and I can’t understand why it took seven hours. At one point Alex said that the teleprompter said to tap dance and then tap danced while sing-saying ”Were, just killing time here folks.” I also wasn’t a fan of how it started on one website and ended on another.
Overall not bad not great. What did you think? You can watch highlights from the night on APTV and I believe the whole show will be up on Amazon and Twitch for the next week. Be aware that Amazon made me put in my date of birth before viewing it. Stating that it wasn’t intended for all audiences. I put that my birth year was like 1980 or somewhere around there and it was fine.
