I think that's just about Fantasy Fiction's whole attitude about magical races and not Mary Sue characters.

If anything, Jon Snow is a Gary Stu deconstruction, just like Dany is a Mary Sue deconstruction.

I don't think GRRM went directly for those tropes, but I think Jon is the Boy Hero/Messiah deconstruction and Daenerys is the Badass Girl Hero/Messiah deconstruction which have similarities with Mary Sue/Gary Stu, yes, but not really the same thing.

The Mary Sue trope is not just about a flawless character, it's about a flawless character who is a blatant author wish-fulfillment.

Daario Naharis

1. How I Feel About Them:

I have mixed feelings about Daario Naharis. Normally, I just can't stand liking an asshole. And he is an asshole. I can't blame him for being so, being the captain of a fucking mercenary army even though he is fucking ridiculous. It takes shit to be able to command 500 warriors, and even more shit to do so when you are described even flamboyant in Tyroshi standards.

But, even with his whole doucheness, his entitlement, his cruelty and other bad qualities he probably has that I can't think of right now, I started to grow fond of him a little. He is funny, and he can be kind of sensitive and nice. Not that his niceness is so selfless and he doesn't undermine Daenerys' endurance when he is trying to spare her the sight of the slave children corpses, but I still give him credit for the good intentions.

I also grew fond of him because, at my first reading, I was so fucking annoyed with everything about him nearly only because of Daenerys' silly crush and boner over him. This knee-jerk reaction is not unique of me, most of the fandom had the same reaction as I did but upon further thought given on the character out of a fluke... I realized how silly it was. How problematic it was. I'll get on that at the last bulletpoint.

2. Favourite Scene:

I think the bit where he brings different flowers to Daenerys every day while they are on the march, claiming he is doing it so Dany can learn the flora of the region. I mean, the act itself is sweet and it's not like he is claiming that because he is such a manly dudebro but to flirt with her.

3. OTP for Them (Romantic or Otherwise):

Hizdahr zo Loraq forever.

4. My Endgame of Choice:

He is probably going to die, so I just want him to go out with a FLASH.

5. My Response to Fandom’s Attitude Towards Them:

OH NO, SILLY CLOTHES AND WE HAVE TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE HAVING STUPID CRUSHES AND BONERS ABOUT HIM EVERY CHAPTER. GODDAMNIT DAENERYS STOP BEING SUCH AN IDIOT AND DUMP HIM AND GO BACK TO WESTEROS. EW WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HIM, DROGO WAS FAR MORE FLAWLESS. STOP IT DAENERYS, EW, NO, ARE YOU AN IDIOT, FALLING FOR HIM? OH GODS YOU ARE A STUPID BITCH DAENERYS, YOU CAN'T BE IN LOVE WITH HIM YOU HAVE TO BE BADASS AND GO FLAME DOWN WESTEROS!!!!

So, yeah, those people are dumb.

First of all, since we are talking about Daario Naharis and not Daenerys Targaryen, the opinions about his character gets the flack of this attitude towards Daenerys. Even people who don't think Daenerys is stupid because of having boners for him and choosing to sleep with him acts like Daario Naharis is not a character and just a man George Martin created to make him look cool.

He wears striped pantaloons for gods' sake.

No, you just don't like reading chapters upon chapters of Daenerys' desires about him or you don't like the way he dresses up. This doesn't mean he is not a well-rounded, tangible character.

The bad thing is, this is not a Daario-centric incident. This happens for a lot of minor-but-important characters. The easiest example I can give is Ramsay Snow. People write him off as GRRM's torture device, who is such a silly and cardboard villain. No. As we like to do with lots of side-characters/long-dead characters, we can analyze the text to its deepest cores and realize things about characters that we didn't give much thought before and it can suddenly CLICK in our minds, why one does what he/she does. The same goes for Daario, Ramsay, Joffrey, Qyburn and lots of others.

The second comment I will make about the fandom attitude:

People, get over the existence of a teenager's crush and sexual desire and silly fantasies.

We are all fangirling over actors/actresses here and having silly dreams of them being our future husbands/wives. Give me a break.
