past: born in liverpool, john’s mother died during childbirth and that one thing went on to change much of his life. his father spent his entire childhood drinking and abusing john, taking every moment he could to tell john he was a killer. for a year, while his father was in prison, john and his older sister spent time with two sets of aunts and uncles. after his father got back, john saw the aztec god of the dead and his father dismissed it as just chilldhood imagination.
then john got his letter to hogwarts. his family had been magical on his father’s side for well over a thousand years, all of them attending hogwarts except his father, who was a squib. john was ecstatic to get his letter, wanting to get away from his father. though his sister hadn’t inherited the magic and he’d miss her, he desperately needed to get away from his father. having not grown up in the magical community, he didn’t know anything about hogwarts, but he was just so excited. he was sorted into slytherin and became close friends with hanji zoe.
while back in liverpool on christmas holiday, john summoned a demon to impress his muggle friends, but nothing came of it – at least he thought nothing had. the nearby river became overcome with sludge and rubbish and one of the friends was dragged away and drowned. john didn’t tell anyone about this when he returned to school. the rest of his school years were fairly normal, his summers spent running away and dating random girls to drown out the everything of his life.
sometime after leaving school, john met liza ikumelo, a cop in london that was working her way up the ranks. she called john to deal with a magical issue, believing a demon to be attacking people. john solved the problem and the two hooked up and john never heard from her again, but liza had a son after that, a boy named noah that john would eventually meet while teaching at hogwarts in the future.
after that, john met danita wright, a report at the daily prophet. they dated for a few months, breaking up after she was attacked by a demon from king arthur’s times. she was, however, pregnant with his child, and as badly as john wanted to have a kid, he didn’t trust himself to be a good father. so they agreed that danita would raise rose and he would send her money every month. he wanted to keep rose away from the mess that was his life, wanting to keep her safe. despite this agreement, danita would send him updates often and john would always send her presents for her birthday and christmas that danita would give her.
after forming a punk band in the mid 2000s, john and a group of friends that became known as the newcastle crew responded to the rumours of a possession at a local venue in newcastle. upon entering the venue’s basement, they discovered the owner alex logue held a magical orgy involving his daughter astra. she had managed to summon a demon and john decided to summon a stronger demon, but he forgot to bind it, causing the demon he summoned to take astra’s soul and body down to hell and laying claim to john’s soul. after that, he fell into a deep depression, causing him to be institutionalised at ravenscar secure facility for two years.
once john got out, he wanted to actually make some kind of difference, so he started using his magic for good, though he’d never admit he was. given is knowledge of the occult, john would help people with problems most of the magical community would ignore. as voldemort and his death eaters gained more and more power, john knew he had to do something, so he joined the order of the phoenix.
two years ago he felt something happening in the magical community, something powerful and terrifying, so he went to deal with it. last year it came to a head, with most of john’s friends from the newcastle cew being killed, though they defeated the beast voldemort had tried to bring into the world.
present: john spent all of last year teaching defence against the dark arts at hogwarts. he accepted the position, knowing it was cursed, just needing a year away from his life as a whole. it was a nice break from everything, at least at first. while teaching, he ended up meeting his daughter rose properly for the first time, and aside from that, he met a kid named noah ikumelo. after recognising his magical signature, too close to his own and rose’s, john put together who he was. during christmas holidays last year, noah’s mother was attacked by the demon she originally called john about all those years ago and noah witnessed it, the event traumtising enough to make go selectively mute.
during the same break rose’s mother and stepfather were killed, leaving her an orphan, with her grandmother originally taking her in. after leaving hogwarts, john took the both of them in, unable to deal with the idea that his children were going through such horrible things even with him out of their lives.
since then, he’s been trying to be a father, hoping he’s nothing like his own, and fighting for the order.
headcanons:
john is the laughing magician, a title held by people in his family for over a thousand years. he is one of the most powerful magicians on earth because of it, giving him access to any magic on the planet, able to learn it incredibly easily. it also gives him the ability of synchronicity wave surfing, an ability he doesn’t full control over but that protects him from death. he doesn’t tell anyone he’s the current laughing magician, but if someone asks, he won’t deny it either. he can see thestrals.
john’s wand is made of elder wood, has a vampire fang core, is 11 inches long, and is pliant. his patronus has no corporeal form, instead showing up as a massive fog. he pulls on the memory of meeting his best friend chas, and though it’s a bitter memory now, it still produces an incredibly strong patronus. his boggart is his father. amortentia to john smells like whiskey, cigarette smoke, and a propery english fry up.
at seven years old, john was visited by mictlantecuhtli, the aztec god of the dead. this event, where the god said things that wouldn’t make sense for almost 40 years, terrified him at such a young age. it also gave him the power to be a medium, granting john the ability to see noncorporeal ghosts. john killed the god last year.
john’s pet is more of a familiar. he is the rhyming lizard demon named etrigan. etrigan was born thousands of years ago in hell and currently takes the form of a sungazer lizard. he likes to hang out on john’s shoulder and speak in rhymes at anyone who will listen.
since having a transfusion of demon blood years ago, john’s blood has become toxic to vampires. it has killed vampies who have tried to feed from him in the past.
