I sat down to record some breakdowns and ended up making a 10 minute drone song out of one guitar take. It's pretty dark and washed out, I like it
I am still very proud of this song.
I recorded a drone track live last night using an Electro-Harmonix Cathedral Reverb and a Boss RC-20XL Loop Station. Everything you hear here is guitar.
Stream/download from above or if you'd like to watch a video of me recording it, click here.
Warning: The video spends a lot of time staring at my arm due to poor camera placement.
So we're up to "Ceiling", the fourth and final track from Daybook. Pretty strong closing track, it gets really loud (the waveform's peaks get really high) at the end which is where I came up with the title.
It starts with an almost top 40/pop rock progression that for some reason worked really well. The drum pattern is cool too, I'm a bit of a sucker for ride cymbals.
The lead part that comes in next was kinda tricky to record if I recall correctly because of the different variations, but the end result was worth it. Just like the rhythm section in "Draught" the delay does most of the work.
At about the minute mark, it changes feel completely and starts a nice progressive build-up similar to This Will Destroy You's early work. The heavy reverb on the pickslides made them feel distant which is exactly what I was going for.
I really like the tom/snare roll building up to the crescendo, as well as how noticeably louder it is when it hits. Then it's a par-for-the-course fade out and we're done.
Aaaand... that's Daybook wrapped up! Minus the unreleased track "Desk." Maybe if I get a couple followers/reblogs/likes or whatever I might consider putting it up. ;)
Okay so this is by no means Appellative material, but I did spend the last few hours on it. This is what happens when I start watching Parks and Recreation and put new strings on my 8 string.
Drop F is so much fun.
Before I listen to this one, I always think "Keys." is my favourite but this is probably tied. Track 3 of Daybook is called "Draught" because there was a rather chilly breeze flowing inside on the night I recorded it. Creativity!
The rhythm track is cool in this one not only because the delay is doing most of the work which I really like but because it starts off playing a two-note chord, moves into 3 notes for the majority, becomes 4 notes at the crescendo and then drops back down for the fade out. Makes it all flow smoothly.
Another interesting side note/testament to laziness is that you may notice is in the drum part. Before the lead part/build up starts, you might notice the two hi-hat hits followed by a crash play at different times each repeat. The reason for that being, I originally started writing this one in 3/4 but the aforementioned rhythm part is in 4/4 and I really couldn't be bothered redoing the drum part because I really liked it and I actually ended up liking the way the displacement turned out! Laziness: 1, Professionalism: 0.
