Hi, how do you feel about Applaws wtf and dry food? I have been thinkimg about switching for those to my cat but I wanna know if I'm making the right decision
Sorry this has taken so long to respond to! I’ve been having a lot of migraines lately.
Applaws wet foods are not a complete diet. Some people use Applaws wet canned or pouch food as a topper for other foods or as a treat. Since they don’t add vitamins and minerals and other essential nutrients like taurine (despite their claims it is high in the food because cooking and canning destroys taurine), they should not be used as a base for a diet. They do not contain bones and organs to make the food a whole diet.
I would personally not feed their canned foods, as some contain grains (rice) and some contain carageenan. (Human food grade carageenan is considered safe for consumption; however, there is no law that says pet food must use human food grade ingredients, so I avoid it in pet food.) I would also avoid all fish in a cat’s diet.
The Applaws dry food looks relatively high quality. It contains salmon oil, but it is fairly low in the ingredients list. The first two ingredients are named meat meals, which is good. The third ingredient is inclusive of water, so would likely be seen further down the ingredient list once it was cooked.
I do not advocate feeding dry food to cats, personally. Though this is a high quality dry food, it is high in carbs and lacks essential moisture for a cat’s diet. If any dry food is fed, it would be best to also offer wet food as a significant part of the diet, as well as offering fresh filtered water in a cat fountain (located far from food and litter boxes). Cats should not be free-fed.
Here is my post on choosing a cat food. In addition @catsindoors has a great many links and resources on their cat nutrition page.
