Chile: An Apple Frustation

I probably should start saying that I've always considered myself an apple supporter, since I got my first Mac 6100/60 AV. I can't begin to tell you how many apple products we’ve purchased over the years since we followed a very simple rule: Invest in an machine that will last. And yes, so far that premise have been true with our Apple computers and I've used every single one of them for almost 10 years, until now. Last summer we went on vacation for two weeks and when we returned found our mid-2010 MacBook Pro had exploded on the inside. At that time we didn't know what to do so after a closer look we discovered the battery (which we had replaced on 2012 because it had consumed all of its charge cycles) was 3 times its size, damaging the trackpad but apparently not the entire machine because I could turn it on, the optical unit was apparently damaged as well. After talking to AppleCare in both Twitter and by phone, they told my husband to take it to the technical support right away for evaluation because they needed a diagnosis first to know what the next step would be. The next day I tried to do so but here in Chile the local service told me my Mac was now a "vintage" machine they couldn't even open it without me paying a fee. I agreed as we were directed by an Apple Support Specialist to do so, and when the technician came to retrieve the machine, he told me since it could start leaking and it was a hazard so it was right for me to take it to service. I waited for a week to learn that the mail response form the tech support was ludicrously simple: They couldn't open it since they don't have replacement parts for that machine, and so they couldn't even evaluate how much of the machine was damaged because of the battery. I want to be clear on this point and say it again: this MacBook Pro was in perfect condition, and was damaged by a battery I replaced on an Apple authorized service center center on 2012. The battery was also Apple-branded, of course. The battery had barely half of its charge cycles used, it didn't needed to be replaced again nor did it say that needed replacement in the battery charge indicator or elsewhere. This is where my frustration comes. As instructed earlier by the Apple Support Specialists on the phone, we called back AppleCare, and the response was different with every person that talked to us. One of them (purportedly named Francisco F.), said that it was "normal" for Apple-branded batteries to explode after a while. I want to be clear, we weren’t trying to get a free repair (though the first person that talked to us said that might be a possibility): we wanted some help calling other Apple support centers here in Chile to find the battery so we could buy a replacement one and change it, but they wouldn't even agree to that. Why wouldn't I call to the other support centers myself? Because they won't let you know If they have some parts unless you take the computer to their service. Deep down I feel that since this wasn't my fault at all, if the trackpad and optical unit were indeed damaged by the apple battery they should pay for that repair (the pieces damaged by the battery), but that was apparently too much to ask. From a different course of action (emailing Apple PR monitored Tim Cook’s email), we got a call yesterday from an Apple PR person. I feel very sad whose job description includes the obligation to repeat every 3 seconds "I understand your frustration" and reassure that your case would be on a "report". She practically told us that we should now throw the machine away as it is now company policy to make what we thought used to be a long term investment, a "vintage machine", and so not suitable for support. I understand companies have to stop giving support to their older products, but keep in mind that we replaced the battery which is a huge part of the MacBook Pro three years ago. It's your right to expect an investment of over USD $2000 (The MacBook Pro) to last longer than that. You didn’t have to convince us to buy a newer MacBook Pro, we did that more than once since we bought the mid2010 one… It doesn't matter how long I've been an Apple Supporter, this is a huge company, they don't care about that. They don’t care about their long term users. Apple people, if you are reading this, I no longer call myself an Apple supporter. Now I’m just another “user”. Thanks for the huge disappointment.
