“William, I know that this matter is important to you, but would it be possible to put off protesting your grandfather’s every decision until tomorrow? Our family needs to at least appear united for this treaty to go through.”
Not long from now, Kurt was going to start seeing someone. A while after, that someone would discover he had a sister he didn’t know about. A year or two after that, the sister was going to be present when Kurt married his someone. And a bit further down the line, Kurt would be one of the first people to hold his newborn twin nephews. There were going to be years of happiness. Years of blessings. And then the someone would be gone, and he would take Kurt’s smile with him when he went. Things were going to be different after that. And Kurt wouldn’t be the same person he had been.
But that was then. And this was now.
Kurt had noticed a new boy showing up a few days ago, and had seen him hanging around Peter. He had been curious, of course, but he had decided to stay out of the way for a while and see if he would be introduced. But he wasn’t. Kurt knew it wasn’t because Peter had meant to keep anything from him -- they were best friends, and Peter had never intentionally kept a friend or treat or game from Kurt -- but he was forgetful. So Kurt decided to take it upon himself to remedy this problem.
It was a clear, warm day when Kurt finally caught up with the boy on the grounds, prancing over excitedly, a flower crown perched on his head from when one of the children had made it for him this morning.
“Hallo!” he said cheerfully, all big smiles and bright eyes. “You are new here, ja? And a friend of Peter’s?” He held out a hand to him -- his nephew, who wouldn’t be born for several years yet. “I am Kurt Wagner!”
i don’t want to be a hero. haven’t you noticed ?? its the hero who falls hardest , who must dust themselves off and endure. I AM NO ACHILLES. i won’t fight a war for honor, i can’t fight it for love, sacrifice is not in my blood, i’d have walked away long before the first spear was thrown. I COULD NEVER BE HERCULES, so strong and persistent, but what move could be made on a chessboard poisoned by power ?? checkmate was certain and in the end even his strength couldn’t save him. I WILL NOT BE ATLAS, with arms so bruised they are blue don’t you dare balance the earth on my shoulders for they are too frail. i could not hold the heavens any more than i could hold my resolve to be strong. i told you, the heroes fall hardest and i am already too broken to be brave. / as written by rocky , elliot and violet.
Peter was having an excellent time hanging out with his nephew. They’d decided to spend the morning wandering around the city and catching up. The pair had been busy with their respective superhero groups lately and Peter was missing him.
He was in the middle of teasing Billy, trying to convince him that Peter needed to meet Teddy, when he saw a figure from his past. Panicking, he shoved his nephew into a department store and followed him quickly. He stood between Billy and the door while at the same time looking like he was trying to hide both of them behind a rack of coats.
Send NO!! for my muse to die in front of yours [accepting]
Peter sat next to his nephew in their cell, trying to remain upbeat. He’d somehow been convinced to accompany the witch into space. Not that the trip had really been that bad up to the point where their ship was boarded. Apparently the pair of them were being brought up on some ridiculous charges by an alien government. Billy had told him who they were, but Peter couldn’t remember their weird name.
“We’re gonna be fine.” Peter grinned a little. “We’ll plead no guilty, get ourselves a lawyer, and get home. And we’ll tell everyone about our weird adventure.” Billy shook his head, smiling just a little bit. “Hopefully their judicial system allows for that, Uncle Pete.”“It’ll be fine.” Peter smiled.
However, once they were standing before the strange tribunal a few hours later, Peter wasn’t so sure.
“The crimes of this family have been widespread and unanswered for-” The woman in the center said. Peter was sure she wasn’t speaking English, but he understood her anyway. “Psychic translators.” Billy muttered, noticing his uncle’s confused look.“-until now. Now we hold prisoner two members of the accused. William Kaplan and Peter Maximoff. They have been found guilty.”
“What?!” Peter gasped out. “We haven’t even given our side or heard the official charges!” Billy shouted, more eloquently. The woman looked unimpressed.“It is not required.” She answered shortly. The man to her left leaned over and spoke quietly. She nodded. “The sentence is death. One will be sufficient to restore the balance.”
Peter’s brain was stalled. How could this be happening? He could hear his nephew shouting angrily next to him, but he wasn’t listening. There was only one thought that kept going through his head. Get Billy home. He looked up.“What happens to the other one?”
The woman watched him for a moment. “The other we have no use for. He will be returned.” Peter nodded, not looking at Billy.“Then you will take him home first. Don’t make him stay here.” He was jerked suddenly as Billy grabbed his arm and forced him to look at him.“Shut up. We’re not doing this. We’re not just letting them kill one of us.” He hissed at him.
“Billy,” he said softly. “if we don’t choose, they’ll just choose for us.” He cupped his cheek and met his eyes. “And I will not let you die here.” He kissed his forehead and then pulled back. “He’s not old enough to make this decision. I’m his elder. I will accept the punishment but don’t make him watch.”
The woman watched him for a long moment and Peter was suddenly afraid she would decide to take Billy instead. But then she nodded. Billy was shouting again, but Peter sagged with relief. He turned to his nephew and hugged him tightly. Billy fought against him, trying to break free. This wasn’t happening. It couldn’t. This was supposed to be a stupid fun trip. Just to get Peter to see that space wasn’t so bad. He couldn’t just die out here.
“Billy, Billy,” Peter just stroked his hair for a moment and murmured to him. “It’s gonna be okay. You’re gonna go home. You go see Teddy. Get married. Have babies. Be a superhero. Wear your cape. Tease your mom and Opa for me. You have to live for all these people, Billy. You’re young and you’ve got your whole life. Go live it.” He pressed a kiss to his forehead, tears leaking out of the corners of his eyes.
He was pulled away before Billy was allowed to respond. The witch fought desperately, shouting and kicking, trying to get back. This was too fast. He hadn’t had a chance to say things he needed to. “TAKE ME! TAKE ME INSTEAD!” The guard pulling him back just shook his head. “They would never have taken you. The weight of lives is measured in potential. Yours is greater. It is too much. It would not restore the balance.”
Peter stayed facing the tribunal. If they were going to kill him, they were going to look him in the eye when they did it. The woman walked down the steps slowly and approached him. She raised a hand to his temple. “Wait.” He whispered, eyes wide with fear, though his voice remained steady. “Will you send my body back? It’s important to us.” The woman nodded and touched him.
Billy stood, frozen with his fists against the glass, horror clear on his face as Peter dropped to the floor, dead. His uncle was dead because these monsters thought he wasn’t as important. He could only watch in shock as Peter’s body was lifted, wrapped, and then placed in their- his- ship.
The woman- his murderer- approached Billy. “He has requested his body be returned with you.” He took a swing at her and blacked out. When he woke up, the ship was landed. He was home. And now he had to tell his family that Peter was dead.
