Freak Genes is a collaboration between UK punks Andrew Anderson (Proto Idiot) and Charlie Murphy (Isolation / Internal Credit).  This is very melodic synth based music that has a definite edge similar to Proto Idiot and Isolation.  Both bands don’t rely on synths, so I’m wondering where Anderson and Murphy got the inspiration?  Perhaps they listened to the amazing Apprentice Destroyer album.  Or maybe they decided to take their punk and give it a Total Control twist.  Mikey Young did do the mastering for this.

Actually, there are a couple of bands on Born Bad Records that work a “similar” sound.  Both Frustration and Lonely Walk rely on angular synths.

“Power Station” is released by the ever diverse label Feel It Records (Richmond, Virginia).

Finally, this got the seal of approval of many different Bandcamp users I follow including Toby, Mawkish Twaddler, Rick Hamilton and Gerard Cosloy.

Holiday Music's "Certified Ailments" has been a favorite of mine since I bought it back in early 2020. Now, they're finally releasing another album. If you like it, I would buy it here since they have zero footprint on Discogs.

There are only 2 songs currently available off "333". I love that the first song availabe was "Best in Show" which sounds like it was made in an instrument store a la Apprentice Destroyer. The 2nd song, released the other day is "Final Show", and is more what I expected. I'll stay with my Deerhunter and Dick Stusso comparisons. Can't wait to hear the rest of this.

The album cover says it all.  This is a bitchin’ album.  There really are some kick-ass 80s synth sounds (think Beverly Hills Cop/Harold Faltermeyer...or maybe on song on the Footloose soundtrack).  But then there are just some great pop songs masquerading as 1980s pop music.  Really, I hear so many different sounds here.  When I have this on shuffle, it reminds me of Apprentice Destroyer (check it out on Castle Face Records) at the beginning of a few songs.

I’m sure these guys had an amazing time making this record.  I had mentioned this in The Fighting League post, but that mention simply wasn’t enough.  Dream Damage has done themselves proud with this one.

The first thing worth mentioning about the genius-ly warped and bafflingly brilliant debut release from Apprentice Destroyer, is that the whole thing was recorded at Guitar Center. Secretly and surreptitiously, over the course of months (maybe years?). Repeat trips were made to capture bass parts, drum loops, synth melodies, essentially treating Guitar Center like an impromptu multitrack studio. And as any one who's been to Guitar Center knows, it's often infuriating, as random folks pound away on drums, or shred on guitar. So now imagine one of those guys was actually recording an album...
