Day 14: In Another Life

If Ramona never died from the plague, she definitely would have figured out the link between Lucio and the Red Plague. This would leave her to make a choice: kill Lucio or break the curse linking him to the plague. Either choice would have consequences that would leave a weight on her soul.

Whichever she chooses, once the plague is gone, she and Julian would leave Vesuvia to travel by sea to discover all that the world had to offer. They'd travel to Nevivon where Ramona would meet Portia and they'd become fast friends.

Somewhere along their travels, they might run into Asra. It would be tense and awkward at first, but Ramona would offer a meal and a chance to talk. In the end, Asra would be happy for her, even if she wasn't with him.

Eventually, Ramona and Julian would make their relationship official and have a small ceremony. By the time Ramona is with child, they'd settle in a cottage by the sea, with a room for Portia. There, Ramona and Portia would tend their garden and swap funny stories about Julian, while Julian would open a clinic in the nearby village.

Day 11: Defining Moment

Ramona was used to overhearing people talking about her. It has been happening since she could understand the spoken word. This time, however, Ramona finally put her foot down.

Ramona was 14, finishing up her chores and looking forward to her magic lessons (less like lessons and more like gardening, really...) when she overheard the head nun speaking to another nun. Ramona heard her chastising the other nun for being too soft on her. That Ramona herself was manipulating her for attention. That she was just like her mother, and no wonder even her aunt didn't want her and would rather move away to Vesuvia.

For the first time, Ramona had heard she had any family. In Vesuvia. She confronted the head nun. Told her she was sick of being compared to a woman who's been dead for as long as she's been alive. She had tried to be good her whole life, wanted nothing but to be helpful, but it was never enough. Every tiny mistake was seen as intentional sabotage, while good deeds were seen as manipulative. She was done trying to please them.

She took what few possessions she had and walked out of Nopal forever. She hitched a ride on a merchant's cart and made her way to find this aunt she had just discovered and hoped she didn't hate her, too.

Day 1: Hometown

From the day she was born until 14 years old, Ramona lived in Nopal. It was dusty and hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. The only plants that grew well were cacti.

She grew up in an orphanage run by nuns. She never really fit in, especially once she began to discover her magic. Despite it being disliked, her magic is what made her happy. While she found dancing in the folklorico group and eating at the panadería enjoyable, as soon as she heard she had living family in a distant place named Vesuvia, she packed up what little she had and left it all behind without a single glance back.

Day 9: First Loves

Ramona never really had any love interests before coming to Vesuvia. In Nopal, people didn't really like her and visitors who didn't know her were few and far in between. When someone treats you like shit, that kinda kills any affection, much less love.

Asra was her first love, the first to treat her like a girl with an amazing gift, rather than a menace.

Day 6: Friends

Growing up, Ramona didn't have any friends. However, upon moving to Vesuvia, she met someone who would change her life forever. Asra was a bit of a troublemaker, but he wasn't mean. As a child who grew up on the streets, he was just used to stealing to survive and most authority figures do not like that.

Asra had enchanted her, not with any magic, but with his kindness and infectious enthusiasm. He showed her around the Masquerade and played pranks on people who were rude. He was her first for a lot of things. Her first friend, her first kiss... Asra quickly became very important to her.

Ramona met Muriel a bit later, likely after Asra begged for them to meet. Ramona found him shy and sweet, though he tried his best to look stoic and uninterested. Regardless, she included him in their conversations and activities and helped patch him up when he got hurt.

Dr. Devorak had seemed serious at first, but Ramona soon found he could make her smile, even when drowning in grief. He taught her about the human body and various treatments for illnesses. When not working, they'd just sit and talk for hours, sometimes with a drink.

Her friends were very important to her, and she loved them dearly. This is why, the morning she woke with red in her eyes, she left the shop to Asra. Despite having that fight when they parted, she still loved him and hoped he was okay, wherever he was.

Day 13: Aftermath

After Ramona's death, Asra didn't have the heart to tell her cousins. They were already dealing with not being able to go to their mother's funeral because of the plague, he didn't want to tell them their cousin was dead, too. In some ways, he was also a bit in denial. She changed his life and now she was gone? She was too important to go out like that. Asra then devoted every waking second to trying to bring her back.

Likewise, Julian threw himself into his work, still mourning the assistant who was quite possibly the smartest person he knew. If she'd lived, she might have made a decent doctor. So he dedicated every day to finding that cure, eventually meeting the person that she used to talk about all the time.

Muriel didn't show how much he was mourning, but he was the last to see her alive, saw her being led into that brick tower where none left alive. He'd taken her bones from the pile and instead buried her on the beach, where the sun would always shine down on her. He knew that's what she would have wanted.
