Wings for Life World Run 2022 - App Run Lousada THE STORY BEHIND A PICTURE Some photos taken during the Wings for Life World Run are so compelling that they go around the world. Like this one. Read on for the backstory of a remarkable woman who has been a beacon of hope for people with spinal cord injury in her native Croatia. It’s a great reminder of why we run and why the Wings for Life World Run means so much to so many. The woman in this Wings for Life World Run photo is Manda Knežević. As a young girl, Manda suffered from a severe form of scoliosis, so she had to undergo surgery at the tender age of 16. “When I woke up from anaesthesia, I saw many people standing around me. The doctors asked me to move my legs, but I couldn’t,” Manda remembers. What exactly went wrong remains unclear to this day. During her rehabilitation, she encountered many people who yielded to despair due to their spinal cord injuries. “I was still young, but I decided for myself to lead a good and positive life,” the now 66-year-old recalls. Manda takes part in the Wings for Life World Run every year, to donate to spinal cord research and to make sure that people with spinal cord injuries are not forgotten. “I’ve lived with this injury for so long that I don’t even know what it feels like to touch the floor with my feet. Wings for Life World Run 2022 - App Run Lousada Record: 184,236 participants at the Wings for Life World Run Global fundraiser sets record as largest run in history Never before have so many people taken part in a running event at the same time: at Sunday’s @wflworldrun, 184,236 participants from 195 nations ran for those who can’t. A total of 4.1 million euros was raised for spinal cord research through entry fees and donations. Sweden’s @aronanderson (66,8 km) won the men’s competition for the third time after victories in 2017 and 2018, while Russia’s Nina Zarina (60.2 km) took her third consecutive title, following wins in 2019 and 2020. The runners and wheelchair users had covered an average 12,3 km in 2021 by the time the moving finish line caught and passed them.  “I’m at a loss for words. The number of participants is so much bigger than what we dared to dream of. All I can say is thank you to each and every person who ran, walked or rolled with us today," said @anitagerhardter, CEO of the non-profit foundation @wingsforlife. “Together, we’ve celebrated life today and raised an incredible amount to help find a cure for spinal cord injury.” The eighth edition of the Wings for Life World Run was a spectacular event that not only brought the global running community together, but also had a lot to offer as a race: Some ran alone, or in myriad small groups, across sun-scorched countries in central Europe, at times with snow-capped mountains in the background. Wings for Life World Run 2022 - App Run Lousada O Mundo volta a correr por aqueles que não podem Wings for Life Word Run: Dia 8 de Maio nos cinco continentes. Correr por aqueles que não podem é o lema da mais global corrida do planeta, criando uma união por um objetivo ambicioso: apoiar a investigação da cura das lesões na espinal medula. A nona edição da Wings for Life World Run está agendada para o próximo dia 8 de Maio e a perspetiva continua a ser inclusiva – todos podem juntar-se a esta causa, seja através da APP ou numa das localizações à volta do mundo. Depois da vitória de Vera Nunes no ano passado, Portugal vai defender o título mundial feminino. Já estão abertas as inscrições para a edição de 2022 da mais global de todas as corridas - a Wings for Life World Run. Com números impressionantes que falam por si – até hoje participaram mais de meio milhão de pessoas de 193 nacionalidades – a iniciativa lançada em 2014 introduziu um novo conceito de corrida. A corrida marca a diferença por juntar milhares de pessoas precisamente ao mesmo tempo em diferentes latitudes. Outra marca diferenciadora reside no facto de não existir uma meta fixa, em vez disso os participantes são perseguidos por um Carro Meta que começa a andar 30 minutos depois da saída do pelotão, aumentado progressivamente a velocidade até apanhar o último corredor. O atual recorde da competição situa-se nos 89.85 quilómetos. Wings for Life World Run 2021 - App Run Lousada Since 2014, the Wings for Life World Run community has been running together every year in May for those who can’t. The runners and wheelchair users support the Wings for Life Foundation with their entry fees. Their goal is: to make spinal cord injury curable. And the movement has been getting bigger every year. So far, a grand total of 700,000 participants from 195 nations have registered for the runs, and they have run a total of 7 million kilometers while raising almost 30 million euros for Wings for Life through their entry fees and donations.
