In the end, it was a great short trip to Portugal. But let`s start from the beginning.
We planned to explore the countries beaches for 4 days by Camper-Van. After the first one cancelled our reservation 3 Weeks before start – 5 days before departure, we received this message from the second Camper we booked: “hey guys, sorry you can’t have the van. I will send back the money, hope you find something new.”. We didnt – it is high season and finding a Camper-Van for hire is not too easy. We finally switched to a room over Airbnb then.
Still bleeding I realized the milk was sour
In the morning before the flight I survived an “assassination attempt” by a municipally cleaning car on the pavement when skating home with fresh bread for the breakfast. Still slighlty bleeding on the breakfast table, the milk for our muesli turned out to be sour. The next sign of what was about to come.
On our way to the airport we entered the wrong train and arrived shortly before the check in closed. Our flight was delayed in the end for about 45mins, and we realized, that the seats we bought to sit site by site did not exist (we reserved row 29, the plane had less rows than that). So they gave us new seats – not next to each other for sure.
Arrived in Lissabon, we waited for 2 hours for our luggage, just to be informed, that my surfboard did not arrive. ‘If they might find it, they would deliver it within the next days.’ Not too perfect though, considering that this was a surfingtrip for only 4 days…
The house was not to be found – It could only get better from here
In our rental car we clicked on the navigation link in the Airbnb app to be navigated to our room – and when arrived – couldnt find it. After checking again, we saw that the link in the confirmation email pointed to another location, 7km away in a city we passed before. Arrived there, we couldnt find the house number. We messaged the owner who said she now will wait for us outside. We didn’t find her though. It turned out, the house was about 200m from the first place we were navigated to – so we ping-ponged back again.
Moodwise we had reached the bottom of the valley by then. Which means one thing – it could only get better from there on.
Anna, the owner of the house was great. Funny, nice, she had a full understanding for our situation. First, she showed us our room – awesome. A great view over our village and the ocean behind that. Then she offered us portugese wine. It felt great to have finally arrived.
I was really thankful to have my new AppSwitch App installed. Besides all the stress, I really couldnt have handled high roaming costs on top. Without fearing high costs we could browse the internet to pass time on the airport, navigate with Google maps, research the luggage service company, chat via Whatsapp with the owner to find the house and update home that we finally arrived. Best food, great nature – happy holidays
As our arrival was 4hrs later than planned, we were starving and went to the best restaurant we could imagine. A small tavern just 150m away from our house. Carlos the owner spoke perfectly german and made jokes all the time with us. He told us in german: “Guys, you know why your neighbour is again ordering a beer? Becaus his food takes so long. And funny thing – this is because I forgot to make it, but he doesnt know. So I will bring him now another beer that makes him happy and then rush for cooking.” :D. Luckily, the gy next to us seemed not to understand a word.
We ate a local speciality as starter, which looked very weird (I call it dragonclaws), but it tasted awesome. Our main course was great too. Fresh seafood platter, grilled fish and tiger prawns. As desert they serve portugese chocolate mousse. WOW!
Now THAT is holidays. We felt like we finally arrived.
The next days were pure fun. On the third day they delivered my surfboard, but even without it, we had fun exploring the great nature, rough cliffs, old villages and great food. Being back in the water surfing felt great too. Looking forward to my Philippine holidays in a few weeks.

The formula for appswitch was recently updated to version 1.1.
To install appswitch on your Mac, open your Terminal application and run the following commands;
