Saw Only Four Cows - Appeals to the Charitable

NOTEWORTHY HAPPENINGS.
Who is supposed to enforce the city ordinance as to running of cattle through the streets of Austin? A reporter only saw four cows, in a five minute walk Sunday night, roaming at will and hunting the most inviting yard to despoil. All the cattle were in the prescribed limits, and one cow actually in the middle of Congress avenue, just above Bois d’Arc street. Has the law become a “dead letter” three days after its publication?
Mrs. Harn, the mother of Dr. Harn, sends a communication to the Statesman in which she states that while out on a mission of charity she has found three families near the old school house in the lower part of “Mexico,” who “are on the verge of starvation.” Mrs. Harn appeals to the charitable to come speedily to their relief, as also to the mayor of the city. Mrs. Harn may be found at the Carrolton house, from which she proffers to accompany any humane person to the homes of these unfortunates.
His Happy Deliverance - Suddenly Disappeared

DISTRICT COURT.
The trial of the Bracken case was again taken up yesterday morning, Col. Pendexter resuming his argument for the defense. Col. Sneed followed, concluding the defendant’s presentation of his case.
District Attorney Robertson concluded for the state. All the arguments were attentively listened to by the court, jury and bystanders, and at times the latter gave vent to their feelings in decorous demonstrations of applause. Under an able presentation of the law as applicable to the testimony by Judge Walker, the jury retired for deliberation about 1:30 p,m., and after an absence of perhaps twenty minutes, returned into court a verdict of “not guilty.” Though the verdict had been generally foreseen from the time the state finished its theory of the case, yet the friends of the indicted officer crowded around to congratulate him upon his happy deliverance.
LET JUSTICE REIGN.
James Phillips, Jr., heretofore mentioned as having been charged by indictment with the murder of his wife on the night before Christmas, 1885, has, it is said, suddenly disappeared from Austin. The officer having the capias reports that after diligent search he has been unable to ascertain his whereabouts. The details of this horrid crime are but too fresh in the minds of the Austin public. The spectacle of an innocent child bespattered with the blood and brains of its murdered mother, is enough to make the stones of the street cry out for vengeance. This is one of eight murders within twelve months, over which a dark mystery hangs, and trace of which is as completely lost to human sight as is the trace of the vessel over which the waters have closed. The whole city is interested in bringing the perpetrators of these diabolical crimes face to face with the law. If Mr. Phillips, upon trial, shall not be found guilty, the testimony adduced may point to the guilty one. There is a startling resemblance between these crimes, one which strongly suggests a common origin, and a common inspiration. The fiend of fiends who perpetrated these hellish crimes should be followed to the ends of the earth. “Let justice be done, though the heavens fall.”

The case of the State vs. Bracken is still on trial in this court, with little prospect of its being given to the jury earlier than this afternoon. The afternoon of yesterday was consumed in the examination of witnesses for the defense. The number of spectators in attendance evinces the interest being taken in the case. District Attorney Robertson appears for the State and Messrs. Sneed, Pendexter and Burleson for the defense. Those familiar with the case will remember that a colored man named Hawkins is separately indicted for the same offense.

The case of John Bracken, a police officer, charged with the killing of a negro named Nathan Elgin, in February last, while, as is said, he was forcibly resisting arrest, was called yesterday. A jury was speedily impaneled, and the examination of witnesses begun, but had not been completed at adjournment. The trial still in progress, it is deemed improper to comment on the evidence.

NOTEWORTHY HAPPENINGS.
Remember, the boundaries within which animals are not permitted to run at large: On the north, Orange street; on the east, Waller creek; on the south, Colorado river; on the west, Shoal creek.
The vicious negro, Bud Washington by name, who attempted to carry Ed Hill’s house by assault Monday night, had not, up to a late hour last night, been apprehended. A man’s house should be his castle, and as such, sacred from every form of violence.
Fire and water are the great purifiers. Now, there is a district of this city, situated near the depot, which is the home of every conceivable abomination, but it is above the reach of flood. It is a disgrace to the city, a festering cesspool of rottenness, where the vilest characters of the city consort together. Arson is not counseled, but if an accidental spark should fire this locality from the center to circumference, or spontaneous combustion should lay it in ashes, the city and the cause of public decency would come out largely ahead.
There are some ugly holes in the bridge at the Chestnut street crossing of Waller creek, which need prompt attention at the hands of the proper authorities. One damage suit, even if defeated before the courts, will cost the city enough to repair several such bridges.
Those who are skeptical as to the doctrines of spiritualism are offered an opportunity to bolster their unbelief at the opera house next Monday and Tuesday evenings. Prof. Cooke and Miss Bremond promise to rend the veil and expose the sacrilegious mummery.
The Avenue had more than its usual number of promenaders last evening, many of whom were of the gentler sex, and whose frequent disappearance into doorways evinced that their minds were on shopping bent. Retail dealers report their sales at this season of the year were never better.
Professor Herzog’s band is good enough as far as they go, but for the sake of their reputations and out of consideration for a suffering public, they should learn some new pieces. For many years, in fact, as far back as can be remembered, they have played the same pieces. Give us something new, professor.
To Effect a Radical Cure of Nervous Diseases

DR. FISHER’S NEW OFFICE.
Dr. C.E. Fisher has removed his office from Congress avenue to the new and handsome structure known as the McDonald building, on the corner of Bois d’Arc and Colorado streets. The doctor, in order that he can be readily reached at any hour of the night as well as day, has fitted up a suite of rooms on the first floor and moved his family into them, and his office and residence are now conveniently located together, near the business center. Dr. Fisher is to be highly complimented on the good taste displayed in the furnishing of his offices. In the first place they are large, light and airy, having a southeast exposure. The floor is covered with a new and rich Brussels carpet, and the walls tastefully decorated with steel engravings and oil paintings. Several handsome cabinets containing medicines and surgical instruments, comfortable chairs, and the usual furniture of an office, are conveniently placed about the room.
The doctor will, at an early day, add to his office furniture a galvanic and faradic cabinet battery, one of the latest and greatest introductions to the surgical world. Dr. Fisher recently purchased this cabinet at a cost of $300 while in New York, and his is the first one that has been sent to any distance from that place, and was the seventh constructed with the latest applications. The battery consists of forty cells, with all the modern conveniences for testing the resistance of different persons to the electric current; for the division of currents, and for the accurate application of electricity for therapeutic and surgical purposes. Dr. Fisher asserts, that with his new cabinet battery he will undertake to effect a radical cure of nervous diseases, notably such as penman’s palsy, telegrapher’s paralysis, and kindred afflictions. He further agrees that the application of electricity in diseases of this kind is but another instance of the fundamental principle of Homeopathy, “that like cures like.” The cells for the generating and restoring of the electricity have arrived, as have also the different surgical instruments used in connection with the current, but the cabinet itself has so far failed to put in an appearance, though daily expected.
Ice Cream Season - Infant Avidity - Seen in Saloons and Backyards

Walter Jacoby’s Ice Cream Parlors and Garden are now open for the season.
Governor Ireland will be the orator of the day at the fireman’s celebration on San Jacinto day.
On Tuesday last a serious accident happened to the infant child of Dallas Brown (colored), of this city. With infant avidity it got hold of a bottle of carbolic acid, and, of course, stuck the neck of the same in its mouth -- with anything but pleasant results. Fortunately, not much of the liquid ran out, and the child’s mouth, though seriously burnt, is not dangerously hurt. It was doing better, at last accounts.

About 4 p.m. yesterday a German lady came into the county judge’s office with an anonymous note addressed to him, stating that she was crazy. A writ de lunatico was immediately issued, and she was adjudged insane.
She gave her name as Celia Marianna Schlahs, and says that she left a husband and ten children near Round Top, in Fayette county. She was well-dressed, and from all appearances, well-to-do.
Several witnesses testified to seeing her in saloons and in the back yards of avenue stores, and in other places, under circumstances which led some good Samaritan to direct her to the proper authority.
