We all remember that day. These pics depict what we recall in Cullman though they don’t convey the size, sounds, strange colors of dark blackish blue-green sky, lofted debris, and smells of destruction. For us, it was particularly tough emotionally and brought back hard memories. Nearly a decade prior 11/10/02 (the Veteran’s Day weekend outbreak), we experienced a complete loss of everything, our entire Smith Lake home gone down to the basement’s concrete slab in Bremen AL by an unexpected strong F3 as we sought safety in the Cullman Courthouse basement. After years of recovery and tragic life events that slowed our recovery process and even took us away from the lake area for a short time, we then faced the 4/27/11 Cullman tornado head on. It traveled directly center between my family, who were on opposite sides of town, as we watched it barrel through Cullman in great fear. My wife was on the south side of town with our 5yo son near East Elementary and I was on the north side near Belk’s. Both of us feared the worst as we stared it down coming and going between us while praying for each other and all of Cullman. We will never forget our safe reunion later that day and finding out the courthouse, which had saved us from mortal harm almost a decade prior, had taken a direct hit. But how relieved was our whole community, in the days and weeks past the event, in a town shut down and under national guard assistance, as we all learned most were safe in Cullman—and that was a miracle we all held on to as the town immediately began to slowly rebuild. Some felt our precious hometown dodged a bullet that day and are forever thankful. But, throughout AL and nearby states...the tornado outbreak of that day took a much worse and more tragic toll, and so many lives lost in our state, including 2 in our area, are forever remembered and cherished.
